Chapter 6 - THE FIRE IN THE RECORDS ROOM
The fire damaged paper archives but left the main building safe.
Investigators found two ignition points.
It was not an electrical accident.
Ethan claimed the destroyed files were routine staffing records already backed up digitally.
The backup server failed during the same hour.
Someone with administrator access initiated deletion before the fire alarm.
The login belonged to Michael.
His account should have been disabled after his death.
Hayes Haven’s board announced that an unknown person had stolen his credentials.
Gerald blamed me publicly.
He said I possessed Michael’s old laptop and was “conducting a campaign of revenge.”
I did not have the laptop.
It disappeared from his car after the crash.
My employer, a community health nonprofit, placed me on paid leave while the fraud allegations were investigated. My job involved grant records. They could not ignore public claims that I had manipulated company systems.
The family had found a way to make evidence expensive again.
Emma returned home but woke crying whenever metal struck the kitchen sink.
She refused to sit at the table.
Her therapist began with picnic meals on the living-room floor.
No one forced progress.
Lily sent Emma a drawing through child services.
Two girls sat at a table without adults.
Beneath it Lily had written:
I AM SORRY MY MOM HURT YOU.
Emma asked whether Vanessa would throw another pan.
“I don’t know,” I said. “But she cannot come near us now.”
Patricia violated the protective order by waiting outside Emma’s preschool.
She did not approach.
She held a sign visible through the fence:
RETURN WHAT MICHAEL STOLE.
Police removed her.
The incident strengthened the order and led to electronic monitoring.
Gerald called it a grieving grandmother’s mistake.
Detective Bennett obtained the fire-damaged facility’s cloud billing records from the state.
The company had billed for forty-three employees during one month.
Only twenty-eight appeared in entrance-camera footage.
Payments connected to the missing shifts moved through a staffing agency called Meridian Care Solutions.
Its owner was hidden behind a trust.
