Chapter 10 - WHAT MICHAEL DISCOVERED
Patricia had not fled randomly.
She went to the oldest Hayes Haven property, a closed facility awaiting renovation.
Police found her in Michael’s former archive office with boxes of original records.
She had poured fuel along one wall.
She held no weapon.
She surrendered after Detective Bennett told her the building was surrounded.
The records revealed the full secret Michael died protecting.
For years, Hayes Haven billed government programs and private insurers for staff who did not exist, therapies never provided, and medical equipment purchased only on paper.
Understaffing caused falls, delayed medication, untreated infections, and at least one death the company classified as unavoidable decline.
Vanessa managed the false staffing network.
Ethan moved money through shell agencies.
Gerald approved budgets and concealed complaints.
Patricia protected the family trust, paid witnesses, and controlled records.
Michael discovered the system when a resident’s daughter challenged a bill.
He began a second audit outside normal channels.
Then he transferred his shares to Emma’s trust so the family could not erase his voting power after his death.
The blue envelopes contained evidence packages for regulators, Claire, Sarah, the safe-deposit box, and an unknown fifth recipient.
Patricia admitted emptying the box and searching our apartment.
She claimed she never intended to hurt Emma.
She wanted the key before investigators found the documents.
“What happened to Michael?” Bennett asked.
Patricia’s face changed.
She said Gerald ordered Thomas to remove Michael’s phone after the crash.
She said Vanessa followed Michael from the board meeting.
She refused to say more without counsel.
The records established fraud.
They did not yet establish homicide.
Then forensic analysts recovered the remainder of Michael’s unsent audio.
Rain struck the windshield behind his voice.
“Vanessa is following me. Dad told me to meet him at Black Creek. If this recording stops, check the maintenance order Ethan approved.”
The maintenance order authorized emergency brake work on Michael’s car that morning.
The mechanic named on the form did not exist.
Ethan had approved payment.
He swore Gerald told him it was a routine repair.
