Chapter 5

PART 5

Just after sunrise, Adrien finally opened the door to his office.

He looked as though he had aged ten years overnight.

His tie was gone.

The top button of his shirt hung open.

Dark circles shadowed his bloodshot eyes.

Outside the office, Clara shot to her feet.

Inès was still asleep against her shoulder.

The little girl's stuffed rabbit dangled loosely from one tiny hand.

The moment Clara saw Adrien's face, her stomach dropped.

She spoke before he could.

"Mr. Delmas... I swear I didn't take anything."

Her voice trembled.

"I didn't know anything about the foundation. I never touched the food deliveries. I just... I just wanted to keep my job."

Adrien stared at her.

His heart sank.

She was defending herself...

Before anyone had accused her.

As though life had taught her that innocence alone was never enough.

As though apologizing had become a survival instinct.

He took a slow breath.

"Clara..."

His voice was gentle.

"You don't have to explain anything."

She looked at him, confused.

"I watched the footage."

Silence.

"All of it."

Clara's face slowly lost its color.

"You... you saw everything?"

"I saw what Camille did to Inès."

His voice cracked slightly.

"I saw what she did to you."

He paused.

"And I saw what she did to my foundation."

Clara covered her mouth with both hands.

"Oh, my God..."

"I'm the one who owes you an apology."

She shook her head immediately.

"No... you couldn't have known."

"I should have."

Adrien looked around the quiet hallway.

"This is my house."

"My responsibility."

"I trusted the wrong person."

"And because of that..."

He glanced toward the sleeping child.

"...your daughter paid the price."

Tears filled Clara's eyes.

She had expected to be fired.

Instead...

Someone was apologizing to her.

It felt almost impossible to believe.

"I should have spoken up," she whispered.

"I wanted to so many times."

"But every time..."

She swallowed hard.

"I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

"Losing everything."

"My apartment."

"My paycheck."

"My daughter's medicine."

She forced herself to meet his eyes.

"When you're poor..."

"You learn to stay quiet."

Adrien didn't answer immediately.

Because there was nothing he could say that would erase what had already happened.

After a long silence, he spoke.

"This ends today."

By eight o'clock that morning, Adrien had already set everything in motion.

His attorney arrived first.

Then Mireille.

Then the foundation's logistics director.

Boxes of financial records covered the dining table.

Printed bank statements.

Supplier contracts.

Security-camera screenshots.

Delivery manifests.

Audio transcripts.

Every piece of evidence had been organized into neat folders.

No one spoke much.

They didn't need to.

The facts were devastating.

Mireille looked up from her laptop.

"The transfers are confirmed."

"The shell company received payments for shipments that never reached the charities."

The logistics director nodded.

"We tracked the missing deliveries."

"They were rerouted to independent grocery distributors."

Adrien's attorney quietly closed another folder.

"We already have enough evidence for criminal charges."

Adrien looked out the dining room window.

The garden was peaceful.

Birds chirped outside.

Inside the house...

Everything was about to change forever.

He spoke without turning around.

"Has Camille been notified?"

"No."

"Good."

He finally faced the room.

"I want her to walk in believing this is just another morning."

Upstairs...

Camille stood in front of the mirror, fastening a pair of diamond earrings.

She admired her reflection.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

She had no idea that downstairs...

Her entire world was waiting to collapse.

She slipped her engagement ring back onto her finger...

Straightened her white blouse...

And headed toward the kitchen.

She still believed she was in control.

She couldn't have been more wrong.
