Chapter 4

PART 4

The first video began without sound.

Camille walked into the kitchen just after eight in the morning.

She opened the staff refrigerator.

Reached for a small pink lunch container with INÈS written across the lid.

She glanced around to make sure no one was watching.

Then...

She tossed it straight into the trash.

Adrien frowned.

Maybe there was an explanation.

Maybe the food had spoiled.

He clicked on the next recording.

The second video erased that possibility.

Camille stood at the sink, opened a package of animal crackers, and dumped every last one into the garbage disposal.

She turned on the faucet.

The crackers dissolved into soggy crumbs before disappearing down the drain.

She smiled.

A slow...

Satisfied...

Almost amused smile.

Adrien's jaw tightened.

He kept watching.

The third recording showed Inès sitting quietly on a stool, her tiny legs swinging back and forth.

She wasn't making noise.

She wasn't touching anything.

She was simply waiting for her mother to finish cleaning.

Camille walked past her without a glance.

Then, just loud enough for the camera's microphone to capture every word, she murmured,

"You'll eventually learn that you don't belong here."

Adrien removed his glasses.

He rubbed both hands across his face.

His chest felt heavy.

Not just with anger.

With shame.

Under his own roof...

Inside the home he believed was safe...

A three-year-old child had been humiliated simply for existing.

He forced himself to keep watching.

Another clip.

Camille intentionally spilled an entire glass of red wine onto a cream-colored rug.

Seconds later, she summoned Clara.

"What are you waiting for?" she snapped.

"Clean it."

Clara dropped to her knees without a word.

She scrubbed the stain while Camille stood over her, sipping coffee.

Another recording.

Clara quietly placed a loaf of bread on the bottom shelf of the staff refrigerator before going upstairs to finish the laundry.

Ten minutes later...

Camille returned.

She took the bread.

Slipped it into a shopping bag.

And carried it out through the back door.

Another clip.

Inès wandered into the living room looking for her stuffed rabbit.

Camille grabbed her by the arm.

Not violently enough to leave bruises.

But firmly enough to make the little girl flinch.

The child lowered her head...

And whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Adrien paused the video.

His hands were shaking.

A three-year-old had learned to apologize...

For being hungry.

For taking up space.

For breathing inside someone else's house.

He leaned back in his chair.

For several long seconds...

He couldn't move.

Then he opened another camera.

Service Entrance.

The timestamp was three weeks earlier.

A delivery van pulled through the rear gate.

Camille walked outside carrying a large manila envelope.

Several workers unloaded boxes stamped with the logo of A Table for Tomorrow.

Adrien watched carefully.

Those food boxes were supposed to be delivered directly to partner charities.

Instead...

The workers loaded them into another unmarked white van parked farther down the driveway.

His eyes narrowed.

He fast-forwarded.

The same thing happened again.

And again.

Different dates.

Different drivers.

Always the same routine.

Then one recording captured something even worse.

The microphone picked up Camille's voice with perfect clarity.

"Deliver half."

She handed an envelope to one of the drivers.

"Invoice Adrien for the full shipment."

The driver hesitated.

"What if he checks?"

Camille laughed.

"He won't."

She folded her sunglasses onto her face.

"Adrien trusts me."

Silence filled the office.

Adrien stared at the frozen frame on the screen.

His pulse thundered in his ears.

This wasn't just cruelty.

This wasn't simply emotional abuse.

Camille had been stealing food meant for struggling families...

While throwing away the meals of a hungry three-year-old living under the same roof.

She was profiting from hunger.

At exactly 11:14 p.m., Adrien reached for his phone.

His first call was to Mireille.

"I need every contract Camille approved."

Every supplier.

Every invoice.

Every bank transfer.

Every delivery route."

"I'll send everything."

His second call went to the foundation's legal counsel.

His third...

To the director of logistics.

No one asked questions.

They heard something in Adrien's voice that told them this couldn't wait.

By two o'clock the following morning...

The entire scheme had been uncovered.

Camille had replaced the foundation's longtime supplier with a company that appeared cheaper on paper.

In reality...

The business belonged to the boyfriend of one of her cousins.

The invoices had been inflated.

Hundreds of food packages were diverted every month and quietly resold through unauthorized grocery distributors.

The fraud totaled hundreds of thousands of euros.

But strangely...

That wasn't what made Adrien feel sick.

What haunted him...

Was imagining the mothers waiting by their apartment doors for food deliveries that never arrived.

Children pretending they weren't hungry.

Elderly people skipping meals so their grandchildren could eat.

And all the while...

May you like

The woman he planned to marry had looked a starving little girl in the eyes...

And thrown her lunch into the trash.
