Chapter 8 - THE MAN BESIDE THE POOL

Charles Bell had notarized more than false trust documents.

He helped Jason destroy evidence.

Traffic footage showed his van arriving at 11:18 p.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Harris’s recording captured two male voices near the pool.

Bell claimed Jason told him the bags contained old business records damaged by mold.

One bag split while they dragged it.

Children’s photographs spilled onto the patio.

Bell saw them.

He continued.

Prosecutors charged him with conspiracy, evidence tampering, fraud, and false notarization.

His cooperation agreement required him to identify every document he certified and every account he helped create.

Bell revealed Jason’s planned final step.

If the trust distribution cleared, Jason intended to file an emergency report accusing me of kidnapping Emily during a violent trespass.

Sarah would be declared medically unstable after an “accidental overdose.”

Jason would request temporary authority over her finances and permission to relocate Emily for safety.

The Belize tickets were only the first leg.

A second reservation continued to Panama under the name Jonathan Vale.

“He planned to leave me behind?” Sarah asked.

Bell looked toward his attorney.

“He said you would not be traveling after the airport.”

The statement did not prove a murder plan.

It proved Sarah’s ticket may have been camouflage.

Police found an accidental-death policy on Sarah worth one million dollars.

Jason was beneficiary.

He had obtained it using a falsified medical questionnaire.

No policy covered Emily.

The trust was more valuable with her alive and under his control.

The district attorney added insurance fraud and attempted custodial interference.

A statewide alert for Jason remained active.

For six weeks, no confirmed sighting held.

Then someone accessed Sarah’s cloud account from a public library near the hospital.

Police reviewed cameras.

A man wearing a baseball cap and medical mask used the computer for seven minutes.

His height and gait matched Jason.

He downloaded Emily’s treatment schedule.

The hospital increased security.

Michael—me—sorry, I was Michael. I had not slept well since the rescue.

I began seeing Jason in every parking lot.

Dr. Brooks warned me not to transfer that vigilance to Emily.

“She cannot become responsible for spotting him before you do.”

So security plans remained adult plans.

Emily chose whether to know broad details.

We told her Jason had not been caught.

We did not tell her every possible location.

Two days later, a maintenance worker arrived outside the pediatric therapy suite carrying a tool bag.

Mrs. Harris happened to be with us.

Emily had invited her to see the picture she drew of the rescue.

Mrs. Harris looked at the worker and froze.

“That’s how he walks.”

The worker turned.

I saw the missing notch in his eyebrow.

Jason ran.

Hospital security locked the stairwell doors remotely.

I followed for three steps.

Then Emily screamed my name.

I stopped.

Protection meant staying with her.

Security and police pursued him.

They found Jason hiding inside a linen-storage room with Sarah’s old phone, cash, forged identification, and a syringe containing sedative medication.

He was arrested without anyone striking him.

Inside his tool bag was a sealed custody order.

It bore a judge’s forged signature.

According to the false order, I was required to surrender Emily to Jason immediately.
