Chapter 6 - THE FIRST GIRL
Sarah found Lauren through an archived discussion board.
Jason had left a photograph open on his computer. The image showed Ava Brooks beside the same purple student lanyard recovered from the pool.
Sarah searched the school name, then the protection-order docket.
She emailed Lauren from a new account.
Is Jason Wade tall, left-handed, and missing part of his right eyebrow?
Lauren answered yes.
Sarah asked for details.
Lauren described the kennel, the forged accounts, and the threats.
“Why didn’t you call police then?” I asked.
Sarah sat across from us with the guardian ad litem present.
“I confronted Jason.”
Lauren closed her eyes.
“That is what I told you not to do.”
“He said Lauren was obsessed. He showed me messages where she asked him to come back.”
Lauren nodded.
“I sent those while he still had Ava’s documents. I was trying to get him to return them.”
Sarah wanted to believe the explanation that allowed her marriage to remain intact.
Then she found Jason’s passport under the name Wade.
She began copying documents.
Jason caught her.
That was when his control changed from emotional to openly physical.
“Did Emily know?” I asked.
“She saw him push me.”
“And you left her in the house.”
“I was planning to take her the next morning.”
The next morning became Friday.
Jason blocked the custody exchange, locked Emily in the cage, and took Sarah’s phone.
Sarah’s delay lasted one night.
Her earlier failures lasted months.
Both mattered.
Lauren met Emily only after Dr. Brooks approved a brief introduction.
Ava, now seventeen, joined by video.
She did not describe the worst moments.
She told Emily one thing:
“When an adult says a cage is your fault, the adult is lying.”
Emily asked:
“Did you stay in one?”
“Yes.”
“Did your mom get you out?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know before?”
Lauren’s face tightened.
“She knew smaller things and did not understand how dangerous they were. Then she understood and acted.”
Emily looked toward me.
“My mom knew smaller things.”
No adult corrected her.
The prior cases gave prosecutors evidence of pattern, identity fraud, and motive. They did not allow automatic conviction for old allegations.
Lauren’s preserved emails and court records supported her account.
Ava’s old school records documented sudden absences and anxiety.
The student ID in Jason’s pool tied him physically to the earlier family.
Detective Ellis traced the other photographs.
Two belonged to women Jason dated briefly.
He gained access to their accounts but left before children were harmed.
Both agreed to testify about aliases and financial methods.
Then one woman, Nicole Ward, produced a voicemail Jason sent after she ended their relationship.
I know how to make fathers look dangerous. I only need the child scared and the camera pointed correctly.
The statement connected the financial scheme to the rescue trap.
Still, the most damaging evidence came from Mrs. Harris.
Her phone automatically uploaded to the cloud.
A recovered clip showed the backyard two days before my arrival.
Sarah stood beside the cage.
Emily was inside.
