Chapter 8

Anna opened her eyes on the sixth morning.

Lily was asleep in a chair beside the bed.

A nurse noticed Anna’s fingers moving and called Dr. Shah.

The room filled quietly.

No sudden questions.

No crowd.

Anna’s eyes moved toward the chair.

“Lily.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Lily woke.

For one second, she stared.

Then climbed carefully beside her mother without touching the bandaged areas.

“You came back.”

Anna’s face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.”

“You were hurt.”

“The babies?”

“Alive.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

Anna began sobbing.

Lily pressed her forehead against her mother’s arm.

“I took them to the hospital.”

Anna looked at Dr. Shah, unable to understand.

“She brought them here in a wheelbarrow,” the doctor said gently.

Anna closed her eyes.

“No.”

The word held horror, gratitude, and grief.

“Five miles,” Dr. Shah continued. “She saved their lives. She also led police to you.”

Anna turned toward Lily.

“You should never have had to do that.”

“I couldn’t carry you too.”

“Oh, baby.”

They cried together.

Detective Martinez waited two more days before seeking a limited statement.

Anna remembered moving to the farmhouse.

Evelyn said Caleb’s death had attracted reporters and investors.

Victor warned that stress could trigger premature labor.

They told her Miles agreed to isolation.

A new phone would arrive after security checks.

It never did.

Celia examined her.

No records.

No laboratory tests.

No hospital plan.

Anna objected.

Evelyn called her ungrateful.

Victor threatened to challenge Lily’s adoption and place her with “stable relatives.”

That threat controlled Anna more effectively than locked doors.

“I thought if I cooperated until the twins were born, I could leave with all three children.”

“Were you physically prevented?” Martinez asked.

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

“Victor took the car keys. Evelyn watched the doors. A security employee stayed outside at night.”

“Did anyone strike you?”

“Victor shoved me once. Evelyn slapped Lily.”

Lily had not disclosed that yet.

“What happened during labor?”

“It began early.”

Anna begged to go to a hospital.

Celia said transportation was dangerous.

Evelyn gave her tea.

After that, memory broke into flashes.

Pain.

Celia’s hands.

Noah crying.

Eli silent, then crying weakly.

Victor saying:

“They are not supposed to both be alive.”

Anna remembered holding one baby.

Naming them.

Then Evelyn placing a cloth over her face.

The smell was sweet and chemical.

“I woke once,” Anna whispered. “Lily was beside me. The babies were crying.”

“What did you do?”

“I told her where the hospital was.”

That instruction became Lily’s map.

Water tower.

Red sign.

May you like

White cross.

Then Anna lost consciousness again.
