The safe-deposit box was opened under legal supervision.
Inside were:
Caleb’s original trust documents.
A handwritten journal.
Company audit files.
A flash drive.
An envelope addressed to Anna.
And a recording made twenty-six hours before his death.
Caleb appeared on screen inside his office.
He wore a green work jacket and looked more angry than afraid.
“If you are watching this,” he said, “something happened before I could finish the audit.”
He explained that Mercer Agricultural Holdings had been purchasing refrigeration components from a supplier called North Valley Systems.
North Valley was secretly owned by Victor through two shell companies.
The parts cost the company nearly three times market price.
Some failed during transport.
Caleb estimated losses of more than sixteen million dollars.
He also found altered inspection records.
A refrigerated medicine shipment spoiled after a cooling unit failed.
Victor concealed the failure to protect a hospital contract.
No patient harm was documented, but the company billed insurance and blamed the driver.
Caleb planned to present the audit to the board.
Evelyn urged him to handle the matter privately.
Victor threatened to challenge Lily’s adoption and expose private details from Anna’s past.
Caleb refused.
Then he spoke about his car.
“My brake warning appeared twice this week. The service manager says nothing is wrong, but the maintenance record shows someone accessed the vehicle after inspection.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“If my death appears accidental, inspect the electronic braking control before the car is released or destroyed.”
The car had been destroyed.
Victor authorized disposal three days after the crash, claiming severe fire damage made preservation unnecessary.
The official report said Caleb lost control on a wet curve.
No alcohol.
No excessive speed.
No clear mechanical cause.
The investigating officer had requested the vehicle remain stored for thirty days.
The tow company released it early after receiving a document bearing the officer’s signature.
The signature was forged.
Caleb continued:
“Anna, I am sorry I did not tell you everything. I thought I could finish this before the babies came. If Mom or Victor tries to isolate you, contact Miles. Do not accept a family doctor, private midwife, or alternate residence they arrange.”
Anna had accepted all three.
Not because she ignored Caleb.
Because she never saw the recording.
Victor and Evelyn moved her to the farmhouse after claiming reporters were watching the family home.
They replaced her obstetrician.
Confiscated her phone for “rest.”
Introduced Celia Brandt as an experienced private midwife.
Anna believed Miles knew.
Miles believed Anna wanted privacy.
Each side received messages generated by the people standing between them.
Caleb’s final words were for Lily.
“Bug, if you see this one day, you were my daughter before a court wrote it down. No argument about paper changes that.”
Detective Martinez turned off the recording.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then Miles said:
May you like
“Their plan required everyone to remain separated.”
Lily had destroyed that separation by pushing a wheelbarrow through automatic doors.
