Chapter 14

At seventy-four, I sold Sea Glass.
The decision shocked everyone who believed the house had been the prize.
A family with three children purchased it.
They planned to repaint the bedrooms and remove Robert’s outdated security panel.
I approved.
A house is not loyalty.
I kept one brass tide marker from the wall.
The sale proceeds funded restitution support for Calder victims whose properties could not be recovered.
Not all of the money.
I retained enough for my own care.
Self-erasure is not justice.
Vanessa learned about the sale from prison.
She sent a letter.
You gave strangers the house you refused to give your family.
Lydia summarized it.
I did not read the original.
The strangers paid fair value.
My family attempted to cook me alive.
The comparison required no further response.
Vanessa’s debts were resolved through bankruptcy, restitution, and forfeiture.
Her luxury brand disappeared.
Her social accounts remained online as digital ruins of a life presented before the bills arrived.
Daniel filed for divorce during incarceration.
Vanessa contested, then signed after her own counsel explained there was no remaining marital asset worth fighting over.
Their marriage ended on paper long after trust ended in practice.
I moved into a smaller condominium near the Sentinel research campus.
My skin graft healed with significant scarring.
Heat remained painful.
I could not stand close to ovens.
Sunlight on my shoulder sometimes triggered panic.
Therapy did not teach me to pretend the tanning bed was over.
It taught my body that current warmth could be measured.
A cup.
A blanket.
Morning sun through glass.
Not every heat source was a trap.
At a Sentinel training event, a young engineer asked why I stopped pounding on the tanning-bed lid.
“Because the person outside believed my fear belonged to her,” I said. “Stillness gave me enough control to operate the system.”
“Were you certain the override would work?”
“No.”
The room became quiet.
Prepared people are not certain.
They have options.
The smartwatch that saved me entered Sentinel’s archive after all legal matters ended.
Beside it sat the damaged control panel.
The exhibit label did not call me heroic.
It read:
INCIDENT 47B—INSIDER COERCION, MEDICAL DEVICE OVERRIDE, MULTICHANNEL PRESERVATION.
Plain language protected the lesson from becoming mythology.
Then archivists discovered one more file embedded inside the watch transmission.
The video had been sent to three recipients.
A fourth destination appeared in the routing log.
Unknown.
The watch firmware did not contain that address.
Someone had added it remotely before the spa appointment.
Recipient:
BLACK TIDE CONTINUITY NODE.
May you like
The address remained active.
My safety device had been monitored.
