Chapter 6 - THE VIDEO I SHOULD NOT HAVE POSTED

Paul survived the fire because he had gone home early.

His paper records did not.

The building’s camera system melted before cloud upload, but a gas station across the street captured Robert’s truck entering the area.

He claimed he stopped for fuel.

His receipt placed him there.

It did not place him inside the repair shop.

Detective Velez warned me not to discuss the fire publicly.

I listened for two days.

Then Denise released a statement through a family advocacy group.

She described Aubrey as a permanently disabled child whose younger cousin had never been held accountable.

She omitted the bat.

She said the garage gathering was intended to create “restorative understanding.”

The statement included a photograph of Aubrey crying in her wheelchair.

I reacted.

I posted the pre-attack video showing Denise coaching Aubrey and Robert testing the bat.

I blurred both children’s faces.

I believed that made it responsible.

Within hours, strangers had identified Aubrey from older fundraiser pages. Her classmates shared the clip. Comments accused her of helping plan Lily’s assault.

Michael called me furious.

“She is twelve.”

“I was showing what Denise did.”

“You showed Aubrey crying and repeating her mother’s words.”

I removed the video.

Copies remained.

Aubrey refused her next therapy appointment and asked whether Lily hated her.

My mistake did not equal Denise’s crime.

It injured a child anyway.

I apologized to Michael without defending my intentions.

Then I wrote Aubrey a letter through her therapist.

I told her that adults had created the garage attack, not her. I did not ask her to answer or remember more.

A week later, she sent back the ballet ribbon Lily had dropped on the night of the accident.

Denise had kept it in a plastic evidence bag inside Aubrey’s closet.

A tag read:

OBJECT THAT STARTED THE FALL.

The police report said the ribbon had been found beside the control box.

The fabric told a different story.

One end carried a dark grease stain and a narrow tear.

A materials examiner compared it with the lift.

The grease matched lubricant from the platform’s rear safety rail, several feet from the control box.

Lily’s ribbon had not been lying where Robert claimed.

It had been near the mechanical latch.

That did not tell us how it got there.

It proved the original scene had been rearranged.

When Detective Velez confronted Eleanor, she denied moving anything.

Then Aubrey asked to speak again.

“I remember Grandma picking up the ribbon,” she said.

“Where was it?”

“Under the big car.”

“Before or after you fell?”

Aubrey began shaking.

“After Mom told Grandpa the story had to stay simple.”
