Chapter 10 - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO AUBREY
The recovered hard drive answered what memory could not.
GARAGE TEST 1 showed Robert lowering the lift while its warning alarm sounded.
He complained about the noise.
GARAGE TEST 2 showed him fastening plastic ties around the automatic safety latches so they would remain disengaged. He told Denise the modification made the platform “move cleanly.”
Paul Warren’s warning had been correct.
The lift was unsafe under load.
The third video began with Aubrey sitting on the platform edge beside a restored convertible. Robert wanted a promotional photograph for his business. Denise stood at the control box.
Lily was outside, chasing the ribbon that had blown beneath the rear rail.
Aubrey told Denise she wanted to get down.
Denise answered, “One picture.”
She pressed the lowering switch.
The platform descended unevenly.
A hydraulic hose burst.
Without engaged safety latches, the right side dropped sharply.
Aubrey slid backward and fell onto the concrete, twisting as the edge struck her.
Lily ran into the garage after the metallic crack.
She saw Aubrey and reached toward the red emergency stop.
That was the moment Robert photographed.
Lily had not caused the fall.
She had tried to stop machinery that was already collapsing.
The video continued.
Denise screamed, “What did you do?”
Not at Robert.
At Lily.
Robert checked the lift, saw the plastic ties, and looked toward his phone.
Eleanor entered.
Her first words were:
“No one says anything about the latches.”
Then Denise pointed at Lily.
“She touched the switch.”
Aubrey, conscious and terrified, said, “No, Mom.”
Eleanor knelt beside her.
“You’re confused.”
The recording ended when Robert picked up the phone.
The conspiracy began before the ambulance arrived.
Robert concealed a dangerous modification to protect his business and avoid liability.
Denise blamed Lily to protect herself from admitting she operated the lift.
Eleanor coached both children because the simple story preserved the family’s money, reputation, and insurance coverage.
Aubrey’s resentment had been built around a lie repeated during pain, surgery, and rehabilitation.
The family did not merely misremember.
They selected the smallest child in the garage and assigned her responsibility.
Then, seven months later, they tried to break Lily’s leg because maintaining the lie required visible punishment.
Detective Velez showed the recovered video to Aubrey with her therapist and father present.
She watched only as much as the therapist considered safe.
When Lily ran toward the emergency button, Aubrey whispered:
“She was helping.”
Michael turned off the screen.
Aubrey cried for almost an hour.
Not because the truth confused her.
Because it rearranged every person she had trusted.
The prosecutor added charges involving evidence tampering, insurance fraud, child endangerment, and obstruction.
Robert’s insurer reopened the claim and referred the matter to state investigators.
Denise’s civil lawsuit against us collapsed.
My parents’ attorney requested emergency plea discussions.
Before any agreement could be reached, Robert was released briefly for a medical appointment.
He did not return to detention.
Police found the transport officer unconscious beside an empty service road.
Robert had escaped.
His truck was later discovered outside the garage.
