Chapter 19 - THE FIRST MEETING

Theo and Felix were eight when both finally said yes.

Different reasons.

Theo wanted to ask why Regina knocked the coins.

Felix wanted to see whether she was “still bossy.”

The meeting took place at a therapist’s office.

No hotel.

No Valdieri property.

Elena and I watched through an adjoining room only because the boys agreed.

Regina entered carrying nothing.

No pearls.

No designer bag.

Simple navy dress.

Felix noticed first.

“Where jewelry?”

Regina almost smiled.

“At home.”

“Why?”

“I thought simple was better.”

“Okay.”

Then silence.

Theo asked:

“Why coins?”

Regina looked at him.

“I was angry that your mom brought you somewhere I had tried to keep you away from.”

“Coins ours.”

“Yes.”

“You say Valdieri money.”

“I was wrong.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted you to feel like you did not belong.”

Elena’s hand tightened around mine in the viewing room.

Theo frowned.

“Why?”

“Because if you belonged publicly, some family rules changed and I lost a job I wanted to keep.”

There.

Children deserve truth scaled to age.

Then Felix:

“You lock us away?”

“No.”

“You made Mom go.”

“I lied to her so she would leave.”

“Why not tell Dad?”

“Because he would have told me no.”

Felix nodded.

“Dad says no a lot.”

Accurate.

Then:

“Did you not want us?”

Regina’s eyes filled.

“I wanted you safe, but I also wanted you far away. That was wrong.”

Theo:

“Same as not want?”

Regina paused.

“Maybe it felt the same to you.”

Good.

No correcting his experience.

Then Felix:

“Are you mafia?”

I nearly choked.

Regina actually laughed.

“No.”

“Dad looks mafia.”

Therapist covered a smile.

Regina said:

“Your father likes dramatic suits.”

True.

Then Theo asked:

“Can you say sorry to Mom?”

“I have.”

“Did she say okay?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because sorry doesn’t make her trust me.”

Theo nodded.

He understood better than many adults.

Then:

“Can hug?”

Regina froze.

“Only if you want.”

Theo hugged.

Felix did not.

Regina did not reach for him.

Good.

Meeting ended after thirty minutes.

Outside, Felix said:

“She less bossy.”

High praise.

Theo said:

“She sad.”

Elena asked:

“Does that make you responsible?”

“No.”

Good therapy.

Then future contact.

No automatic schedule.

The boys could ask.

Three months passed.

Theo asked.

Felix said no.

Theo had one separate supervised lunch with Regina after therapist approved.

Felix stayed home.

Regina accepted asymmetry.

That mattered immensely.

Then Felix asked six months later.

Slow.

No forced twin unit.

Then the business.

Regina never returned to governance.

No advisory role.

She began donating family-history documents to an archive.

She asked permission before including correspondence involving Elena.

Elena said no.

Regina excluded it.

Good.

Then my relationship with Elena.

I proposed.

Not with old ring.

New one.

Private.

No family dinner.

No business merger language.

She said:

“Not yet.”

I said:

“Okay.”

Then three months later she said:

“Ask again.”

I did.

She said yes.

The boys argued about who would carry rings.

Neither.

They wanted cake.

Normal.

Then one last legal issue emerged before our wedding.

Regina’s old surveillance contractor claimed unpaid fees and threatened to disclose additional archived photographs.

We filed for protective order and contract enforcement.

Regina joined our request.

Not because we reconciled fully.

Because some boundaries should be defended by everyone.

The contractor settled.

Files destroyed under supervised process where legally permitted.

No new scandal.

For once, a threat ended through ordinary lawyers instead of a family patriarch deciding who disappeared.
