Chapter 17 - THE VIDEO UNDER THE HOOD
The garage video came from Claire’s phone propped behind a concrete column.
She suspected Rebecca had entered the car before.
The recording showed Rebecca walking between vehicles with a donor packet.
She opened Claire’s hood using an interior release through the unlocked driver’s door.
For four minutes, her body blocked the camera’s view of the engine.
She closed the hood and wiped the latch.
The video did not show the cut itself.
A hardware-store receipt showed Rebecca purchased a compact cutting tool that afternoon.
Trace analysis from the preserved brake component could not identify a specific tool after three years.
The evidence formed a chain:
Rebecca accessed the car.
The line had a deliberate partial cut.
She followed Claire.
She removed Claire from the crash.
She concealed identity.
She maintained confinement.
The prosecutor retained attempted-murder charges.
Rebecca’s attorney argued the video showed only tampering to frighten Claire or force her to stop, not intent to kill.
Intent would belong to the jury.
Lily’s injury became a separate aggravated-assault and child-endangerment theory.
Prosecutors did not claim Rebecca specifically wanted Lily paralyzed unless evidence supported it.
The law could recognize devastating harm without inventing motive.
Claire’s phone also contained the original messages.
The apparent abandonment texts had been created through a cloned account after Rebecca obtained backup access.
Claire’s last genuine message to Alexander said:
I need one night to verify something. Kiss Lily for me if she falls asleep before I return.
Alexander had never received it.
Rebecca deleted it from the synchronized device in the apartment.
Simon recovered server confirmation.
The voluntary-disappearance story collapsed further.
Claire’s memory card included donor files, board memos, and a short video addressed to me.
“Evie, if you see this, I was right not to trust Rebecca. Do not let her make my fear sound like illness.”
I watched it once.
Then I turned it off.
The video did not accuse me.
That was almost worse.
Claire had trusted me to recognize the tactic.
I failed.
My certification suspension remained appropriate.
I completed ethics training and trauma-informed reporting education.
The board allowed supervised reinstatement after one year.
I could return as Lily’s professional caregiver only if an independent care plan, separate employer, and family-court approval prevented conflicts.
Alexander offered.
I declined initially.
“I don’t know whether Lily needs me as an employee or family.”
“Which do you want?”
“I don’t know.”
Uncertainty no longer required immediate correction.
I continued supporting her without medical authority while a new nurse handled regulated care.
Lily disliked the nurse for three days.
Then she discovered the woman could braid hair while discussing dinosaurs.
Children survived changes adults treated as permanent.
The ranger-station search found one final item.
A photograph of Rebecca standing beside the damaged car after Claire had been removed.
