Chapter 1 - THE ICE WATER

Rebecca was already pouring the second pitcher when I reached the living room.

The stream struck Lily’s hair and flattened it against her face. Ice cubes bounced off her shoulders, landed in her lap, and slid between the cushion and the side of her wheelchair.

The child’s hands tightened around the armrests.

“Please…” Her teeth knocked together. “I’m cold.”

Rebecca held the empty pitcher above her as though considering whether a third would teach the lesson more effectively.

She wore a fitted cream dress, diamond earrings, and the engagement ring Alexander had given her three months earlier. Not one drop of water touched her.

“Call me Mom.”

Her voice remained low.

That made it worse.

I crossed the marble floor as quickly as my knees allowed.

“Move away from her.”

Rebecca turned.

“You were told to stay upstairs.”

“I heard Lily crying.”

“She is having a tantrum.”

Lily stared at me through wet strands of hair.

Her legs did not move beneath the formal dress. They had not moved voluntarily since the accident three years earlier.

Rebecca lowered the glass pitcher onto the coffee table and bent toward her.

“Say it.”

Lily recoiled.

“You’re not my mommy.”

I stepped between them.

Rebecca shoved me with both hands.

My hip struck the marble first. Pain ran through my side as I slid into the leg of the coffee table.

Before I could rise, Rebecca seized the handles of Lily’s wheelchair and pulled it backward.

The wheels rolled over melting ice.

“Call me Mom,” she shouted, “or Evelyn disappears just like your mother did.”

The room went silent except for water dripping from Lily’s dress.

I reached toward her from the floor.

“Lily, look at me.”

She did.

Her small face collapsed.

“Mom,” she whispered to Rebecca. “Please stop.”

The front door opened.

Alexander entered in his business suit, one hand carrying a briefcase.

The briefcase fell.

He saw Lily soaked in her wheelchair.

He saw me on the floor.

He saw Rebecca’s hands gripping the chair.

“Wait,” he said. “Who disappeared?”

Rebecca released Lily immediately.

Her expression changed before she turned around.

Concern replaced fury.

Shock replaced calculation.

“Alexander, thank God. Lily had another episode.”

He crossed the room without answering her.

When he touched Lily’s cheek, his face hardened.

“She’s freezing.”

“I was helping her regulate.”

“With ice water?”

“She became violent.”

Lily’s fingers dug into the chair.

Alexander removed his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

“Evelyn, call an ambulance.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“That is unnecessary.”

Alexander looked at me.

I reached for the phone that had fallen from my cardigan pocket.

Rebecca moved faster.

She kicked it beneath the sofa.

Alexander saw.

His voice became quieter.

“Do not move.”

For the first time, Rebecca obeyed.

I crawled toward the phone.

As I did, I saw her right hand slide into the pocket of her dress.

Something blue flashed between her fingers.

A small metal key.

Three years earlier, Claire Bennett had worn that key on a chain around her neck.

Police had never recovered it after she disappeared.

I looked up.

Rebecca saw recognition enter my face.

She closed her hand around the key.

Then she smiled at Alexander.

“Your daughter is confused,” she said. “And so is Evelyn.”

Sirens began rising from the avenue below.

May you like

Lily pulled Alexander closer and whispered one sentence into his shirt.

“She said Mommy screamed when she took her away.”
