Chapter 7 - BOX 317 OPENS

We opened Box 317 with:
Marlowe counsel.
Naomi.
Independent fiduciary counsel.
Court representative.
Me.
No Prisca.
No family-office employee.
Dual control required two keys.
Eliana’s brass key.
Marlowe’s master.
The lock clicked.
My hands shook.
Inside were not stacks of cash.
No diamonds.
No secret gun.
Paper.
Exactly what Marlowe promised.
Three folders.
One green notebook duplicate.
A sealed digital drive.
Two letters.
And one smaller brass key.
Of course.
Naomi looked at me.
“Your family has a key problem.”
I almost laughed.
The first folder:
PERSONAL.
Second:
NERIAH.
Third:
SUTTON RIDGE GOVERNANCE.
The governance folder should have contained Eliana’s original descendant amendment.
It was missing.
Inventory showed Prisca removed it after the funeral.
But Eliana had anticipated document loss.
Inside the digital drive were encrypted scans.
Password instructions held separately.
The first letter was addressed to me.
DECLAN.
I wanted to open it immediately.
Court counsel stopped me.
“We inventory first.”
I hated professional procedure.
Needed it.
The second letter:
FOR NERIAH WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH.
That stayed sealed.
Good.
The smaller brass key bore a tag:
HOME ARCHIVE B.
The hidden wall cabinet behind Eliana’s painting was Home Archive A.
There was another.
Where?
No location written.
Then inventory staff opened the NERIAH folder.
Not trust contents.
Only a cover memo:
If direct notice to Neriah is suppressed before age seven, independent counsel must examine whether temporary family stewardship has been improperly continued.
Before age seven.
Prisca had told everyone seven was when things started.
The document suggested seven was a deadline to catch something that should already have happened.
My pulse changed.
Then my letter was cleared.
I opened it.
Declan,
If you are reading this because I am gone, do not turn grief into suspicion. My health and safety are separate from the governance concerns in this box.
I stopped.
Eliana knew exactly what a surviving husband might do.
She continued:
Your mother is not dangerous because she is evil. She is dangerous because she believes the family only survives when someone decides for everyone else.
Then:
You love peace. Be careful. Peace purchased by someone else’s silence is only quiet control.
I had to stop again.
Naomi looked away.
The final paragraph:
If Prisca tells you Neriah’s rights begin at seven, she is lying. Seven is when Hawthorne must verify that they were already activated correctly.
There.
The first major confirmation.
Not the percentage.
Not full terms.
Enough.
Then one last sentence.
The original amendment is duplicated in Home Archive B because I do not trust a single copy to remain where I leave it.
The smaller key.
Home Archive B.
Another location.
Another copy.
May you like
And according to Neriah, Prisca had been searching Eliana’s study six weeks earlier.
Maybe she had not found the second archive yet.
