Chapter 8 - THE TRUSTEE WHO SERVED THE FAMILY
The probate court suspended Paul Mercer.
Samuel Price, a retired judge with fiduciary experience, became temporary trustee.
Paul objected that removal would destabilize Sophie’s assets.
Samuel answered:
“An asset is already unstable when its trustee helps manufacture grounds against the guardian.”
The court ordered a complete trust accounting.
Carter counsel delayed, citing corporate confidentiality and pending transactions.
The judge imposed daily sanctions.
Documents began arriving.
Sophie’s trust owned shares.
Properties.
Investment accounts.
Voting rights.
The percentages remained hidden in coded schedules.
Money had moved from the trust to Carter legal firms, wedding consultants, and a “beneficiary protection reserve.”
The reserve paid for the report accusing Sophie.
Her own assets had financed the plan to call her a thief.
I wanted to sue every person immediately.
Samuel stopped me.
“We investigate roles before treating all vendors as conspirators.”
“They took her money.”
“Some may have received ordinary payments without knowing the purpose.”
My anger wanted categories.
Evidence required distinctions.
One vendor was the company that built the oak board.
The order came from Margaret.
Specifications requested solid white oak reinforced with an internal metal strip so it would not bend during outdoor display.
It was far heavier than normal wedding signage.
The designer warned it should remain on a fixed stand.
Margaret insisted it be portable.
Preston removed it from the stand minutes before confronting Sophie.
The weapon had not been built as a weapon.
Its dangerous weight was known.
Preston’s claim that he thought it lightweight became impossible.
Margaret said she ordered quality materials because the wedding mattered.
That explanation did not account for the handwritten note about making sure the board broke.
Detective Cole obtained a search warrant for Carter family communications.
A deleted thread between Preston and Robert was recovered.
P: If Evelyn does not strike me, what then?
R: Pressure Sophie. Mothers move when children cry.
P: Not in front of Olivia.
R: The theft occurs before the vows. Once Grant sees family risk, he will demand the waiver too.
The plan depended on public shame.
Preston’s violence escalated beyond whatever Robert had written.
Robert had still instructed him to pressure a child.
Margaret’s role appeared in a separate message.
M: Put the phone where cameras can find it.
P: She may say it was planted.
M: Children always deny theft.
The coldness of the sentence made me physically ill.
Sophie did not read the messages.
She knew only that investigators believed her.
That was enough for eight years old.
Then Samuel called.
The trust accounting showed a scheduled transfer set for the wedding date.
If my guardian status had been suspended before 5:00 p.m., Sophie’s voting rights would have passed temporarily to Robert.
The transaction would have closed that evening.
