Chapter 4 - THE STATEMENT WRITTEN IN ADVANCE
The scheduled email on Preston’s phone contained three attachments.
The first was the report accusing Sophie of theft.
The second was a draft police statement in Preston’s name.
The third was a petition asking a probate court to suspend me as guardian of any Carter interests belonging to Sophie.
All three had been written before the wedding.
The police statement described events that had not yet happened.
Sophie was observed behaving suspiciously near the groom’s suite.
Preston confronted the minor calmly.
Evelyn became violent.
Security recovered the missing phone from the minor’s clothing.
The statement omitted the oak board.
It omitted blood.
It described my anticipated slap as the central assault.
Preston had expected some kind of confrontation.
Whether he planned to hit Sophie remained uncertain.
The board itself was not hotel property.
A wedding planner said Margaret brought it from the Carter estate that morning.
The oak panel displayed the banquet menu in gold lettering. Its reverse side contained handwritten notes.
I refuse.
Guardian unstable.
Witnesses present.
One note ended with a question:
HOW FAR WILL SHE GO?
A forensic examiner compared the handwriting.
Most belonged to Preston.
One line belonged to Margaret.
The family called them speech notes.
The prosecutor called them evidence of preparation.
Preston was arrested for aggravated assault on a child after multiple witnesses confirmed he swung the board deliberately and with enough force to break it.
He posted bond.
The court barred him from contacting Sophie or approaching our home.
He was still permitted to communicate with Olivia.
She refused his calls.
The postponed wedding became a public spectacle.
Carter Hospitality issued a statement describing Preston as an executive facing a private misunderstanding during an emotional family event.
Grant Meridian Capital paused all transaction discussions.
Robert blamed me in an interview outside the hotel.
“Evelyn arrived determined to create conflict around Adrian’s legacy.”
A reporter asked whether his son struck Sophie.
Robert answered, “The video is incomplete.”
The ballroom camera showed the entire strike.
Evidence became incomplete whenever it harmed a Carter.
Rachel filed an emergency request for all of Adrian’s trust documents.
Carter counsel objected, claiming Sophie’s interests were already protected by an independent trustee.
The trustee was Paul Mercer.
He had worked with Robert for thirty years.
He declined to speak with us without authorization from the family office.
That was not independence.
The court ordered limited disclosure.
The first schedule showed Sophie possessed a beneficial interest in Carter Hospitality.
The percentage was redacted.
The second showed I held certain guardian responsibilities.
Those sections were redacted too.
The third contained a clause titled:
REMOVAL FOR FAMILY INTERFERENCE, CRIMINAL CONDUCT, OR COERCION OF BENEFICIARY.
My slap and Sophie’s alleged theft fit the words too neatly.
Preston’s phone was not merely meant to embarrass us.
It was meant to create the exact record required to remove me.
Then a technician recovered a deleted audio file.
Robert’s voice said:
“Once the phone is found, Evelyn will react. Make certain the board breaks before security enters.”
The board.
Not the wedding board of directors.
