Chapter 4 - THE BOARD PAINTED TO LOOK WHOLE
The county sent a forensic engineer named Dr. Samuel Kent to inspect the treehouse.
He removed the broken railing section, photographed every fastener, and tested the remaining wood.
The vertical post had rotted from the inside.
A proper repair required replacing the post and reinforcing the platform connection.
Gerald had inserted two short interior drywall screws through wood filler.
The screws penetrated less than an inch into sound material.
Then he painted over the filler.
From the yard, the rail looked new.
Under pressure, it was weaker than before.
“Could he have believed this was safe?” I asked.
Dr. Kent chose his words carefully.
“A person with no building knowledge might misunderstand. Mr. Hayes spent thirty years maintaining rental properties. His own tool marks show he discovered the rot.”
“Did he intend for it to break?”
“I cannot determine intent. I can say the repair concealed a known structural defect.”
Police recovered messages from Gerald’s phone.
MARCUS: Emma says the rail wiggles. Please block the ladder if it needs real work.
GERALD: I’ll handle it.
MARCUS: Don’t just patch it. She climbs fast.
GERALD: I said I’ll handle it.
An hour later, Gerald messaged Patricia.
GERALD: Post is rotten. Needs replacement.
PATRICIA: We don’t have all day. Charlotte needs the balloon frames delivered.
GERALD: It won’t hold.
PATRICIA: Make it look fixed and tell Marcus to keep the child off it.
No message was ever sent to Marcus.
Charlotte joined the conversation.
CHARLOTTE: Dad, please hurry. The venue charges overtime.
GERALD: This is more important than balloons.
CHARLOTTE: Madison has waited all year. Emma has enough toys.
PATRICIA: Fix the appearance and leave.
Gerald responded:
Fine.
That word remained on the screen while I remembered the sound of Emma hitting the ground.
Patricia’s attorney called the messages ordinary family pressure. Gerald’s attorney claimed he intended to return with proper materials the next morning.
He had removed the warning tape.
He had told Marcus the repair was complete.
The prosecutor added reckless child endangerment and evidence concealment to Gerald’s case.
Patricia became a subject of the treehouse investigation because she knew the post was unsafe and ordered a cosmetic patch.
Charlotte’s role remained under review.
She had pressured Gerald to leave, but no message yet proved she understood the immediate danger.
Then police found photographs from her phone.
At 4:02 p.m., Patricia sent Charlotte a picture of the corroded bracket Gerald removed.
The message beneath it read:
Your father is being dramatic again.
Charlotte replied:
Throw it away before Rebecca sees it. We need them focused on paying the party invoice.
Patricia did not throw it away.

When police searched her car after the ICU assault, the bracket was still there beneath Charlotte’s unpaid invoice.
