Chapter 26 - THE NEXT CHILD

Maelis became a mother at thirty-two.

A daughter.

Elise May.

I cried at the name.

She said:

“Don’t make it weird.”

Impossible.

At the first family birthday, Elise May reached toward a cupcake before dinner.

Maelis caught her hand gently.

“After sandwiches.”

The child screamed.

“No!”

Maelis laughed.

“Still after sandwiches.”

I watched carefully.

Food boundary.

Normal.

No slap.

No humiliation.

No comparison with another child.

After two bites of sandwich, Elise May got her cupcake.

She ate frosting first.

Disgusting.

Sabine, now thirty-five, sat beside us with her own children.

No favored seats.

No first-grandchild hierarchy.

Just chaos.

At one point Elise May took another child’s cookie.

Maelis returned it.

“Ask.”

Boundary.

Not indulgence.

This mattered.

Healing does not mean children get everything because an ancestor once withheld too much.

It means rules stop carrying contempt.

Later Maelis asked:

“Were you watching me?”

“Yes.”

“For Grandma behavior?”

“Maybe.”

She sighed.

“Dad.”

“Sorry.”

“Am I allowed to parent without being compared to a dead woman?”

“Yes.”

Good correction.

I was still learning.

We sat outside.

She handed me Elise May.

“Hold her.”

I asked:

“You sure?”

Maelis laughed.

“You’re Grandpa, not a hostage negotiator.”

Fair.

I held my granddaughter.

No DNA thought.

No inheritance thought.

May you like

Just baby.

That was progress.
