Chapter 22 - ODETTE’S LAST BIG LIE
The late conflict arrived when Maelis was twenty-three.
Not a new secret.
A consequence of the old one.
A documentary producer contacted her.
They had obtained:
Court records.
Fake DNA copies.
Dinner video.
They wanted an episode about “Inheritance Lies.”
Odette had signed a preliminary release.
Why?
Money?
Only $15,000 appearance fee.
Not significant.
Attention.
Control over story.
Again.
The producer sent Maelis a proposed summary.
It said:
Odette suspected Elise’s infidelity and fabricated DNA evidence after discovering Cedric might not be Maelis’s father.
Wrong.
The independent tests proved I was.
“After discovering” falsely suggested underlying evidence.
Another line:
Cedric violently attacked his mother after she threatened to reveal Maelis’s uncertain paternity.
Wrong framing.
My assault real.
Paternity not uncertain.
Maelis was furious.
“Can we stop it?”
Not entirely.
Court records public.
Dinner video owned by guest who sold rights?
We checked.
The guest had licensed it.
Legal.
But defamation and privacy lines existed.
We could demand corrections.
Maelis decided to respond publicly for the first time.
Not a media revenge tour.
One written statement through counsel:
My paternity was established by two independent DNA tests. The earlier report was fabricated. My father’s assault conviction and my grandmother’s conduct are separate facts. Please do not describe proven paternity as uncertain for entertainment.
Perfect.
The producer corrected.
Odette objected.
Called Maelis.
First unsupervised call in years.
“You made me look like a liar.”
Maelis answered:
“You were convicted over a false document.”
“You know what I mean.”
“No.”
Odette started blaming editing.
Maelis interrupted:
“If you do the documentary, that’s your choice. Don’t make me uncertainty again.”
Then hung up.
I watched her after.
Shaking.
“Want me to handle it?”
“No.”
Good.
She handled it.
Odette ultimately withdrew from the documentary.
Not because I threatened.
Because Margot and Sabine told her they would not participate.
Without family drama, producers lost interest.
That was the final counterattack.
Not a secret box.
Not new evidence.
