CHAP 3 — The Driveway

Nathan arrived with police lights behind him.

Three black SUVs came first.

Then a sheriff’s cruiser.

Then an ambulance.

Rain smashed against the street in silver sheets. The house glowed through it, bright and careless, music still shaking the windows as if nothing outside mattered.

Nathan was out of the vehicle before it stopped.

His polished shoes hit the wet concrete.

“Lily!”

She was near the mailbox, exactly where he told her to stay, arms wrapped around herself, curls dripping, lips trembling blue.

When she saw him, she made a sound he would hear in nightmares for the rest of his life.

Not a word.

A broken little animal sound.

Nathan dropped to his knees and caught her as she ran into him.

Her skin was freezing.

Her pajamas clung to her bones.

“I’m sorry,” she sobbed into his uniform. “I tried to be good.”

Those six words did more damage than any bullet ever had.

Nathan held her tighter.

“You were good. You were always good.”

Behind him, tactical officers moved toward the house.

The front door opened.

Meredith appeared first, face red with fury.

“What the hell is this?”

Then Claire came behind her in a black top and jeans, hair perfect, makeup still fresh, rage already replacing surprise.

“Nathan, you’re overreacting.”

He looked up at his wife.

The rain ran down his face.

Lily clung to his jacket.

“You made a fatal mistake,” he said.

Claire’s mouth tightened.

“Do not talk to me like I’m one of your soldiers.”

“No,” Nathan said. “My soldiers have honor.”

Meredith tried to push past an officer.

“You can’t do this to us, Nathan!”

The officer caught her arm.

She fought him.

Inside the house, Vanessa, Brooke, and Erin stumbled into the entryway in party dresses, faces shining with panic beneath the flashing lights.

“What’s going on?” Erin cried.

The sheriff’s deputy held up a tablet.

“We have video evidence of child endangerment, unlawful confinement, physical intimidation, and obstruction. Everyone stays where they are.”

Claire lunged toward Nathan.

“Give me Lily.”

Nathan stood with Lily in his arms.

“No.”

Claire’s eyes went wild.

“She’s my stepdaughter. I’ve been caring for her while you played war hero.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“You locked her outside in a storm.”

“She was throwing a tantrum!”

Lily buried her face in Nathan’s chest.

That decided him.

All restraint disappeared from his voice.

“Secure them! Every single one of them!”

The officers moved.

Meredith screamed as they restrained her. Claire was pinned against a black SUV, shouting that Nathan was abusive, that this was a misunderstanding, that Lily was manipulative.

Vanessa began crying.

Brooke shook so violently her red dress stuck to her knees.

Erin whispered, “Oh my God... they’re taking Mom.”

Nathan did not look away from Claire as she was pushed toward the cruiser.

He wanted to hate her loudly.

Instead, he held his daughter quietly.

That frightened Claire more.
