CHAP 2 — What Happened While He Was Gone

Nathan had missed the first signs because he was trained to endure distance.

Soldiers learn to accept bad video calls, delayed messages, strange pauses, and the ache of not knowing whether home is telling the truth.

But Lily had been telling him.

Just not with words.

The first month of deployment, she showed him drawings from school. By the third month, she said she could not find her crayons.

The fourth month, her bedroom looked different behind her.

“Where are your glow stars?” Nathan asked.

Claire answered before Lily could.

“We’re redecorating. She’s too old for baby things.”

Lily’s eyes had filled.

Nathan noticed, but Claire laughed and said, “She’s dramatic lately.”

Then Meredith moved in “to help.”

After Meredith came Claire’s sisters: Vanessa, Brooke, and Erin. They were in their twenties, loud, glamorous, and useless in the particular way of people who believed beauty was a job.

They used Nathan’s house as a hotel.

Then as a party house.

Then as something they had more right to than the child who had lived there since she was four.

Vanessa took Lily’s room because it had the best light for makeup videos.

Brooke borrowed Claire’s car and crashed it into a mailbox, then told Nathan over text that repairs were “storm damage.”

Erin posted photos from Nathan’s backyard wearing his late wife Emma’s old college sweatshirt, captioned: living our best life.

Nathan never saw that post.

Claire had blocked him from her family’s accounts.

Lily was moved to the small office near the laundry room. Her stuffed animals went into bins. Her mother’s old picture disappeared from the hallway.

When Lily asked where it went, Meredith said, “Dead women don’t need wall space.”

That night Lily cried into her pillow until Claire opened the door and hissed, “You will not guilt your father from across the world.”

Nathan learned all of this later.

From Lily.

From the cameras.

From the neighbors who had heard enough to feel ashamed when police asked why they had not called sooner.

But the worst came from the security system.

Nathan had installed cameras years earlier after a break-in scare. Claire thought she had disabled them.

She had disabled the app.

Not the cloud backup.

For months, the house had recorded what Nathan was too far away to see.

Meredith grabbing Lily by the arm.

Claire ignoring her while she cried.

Vanessa laughing when Lily asked for her bedroom back.

Brooke telling her, “Your dad has a new family now. You’re just leftover baggage.”

Erin filming Lily cleaning spilled wine from the kitchen floor during one of their parties.

And finally, the night in the rain.

Lily had come downstairs because the music was too loud.

She had asked Claire if she could sleep in the living room.

Vanessa told her she was ruining the mood.

Brooke called her creepy.

Erin laughed.

Meredith grabbed Lily’s wrist and dragged her toward the front door.

“You want attention?” Meredith snapped. “Go perform outside.”

Claire watched from the staircase.

Lily screamed.

“Please, Claire, I’m cold!”

Claire folded her arms.

“Maybe next time you’ll learn not to embarrass me in my own house.”

Then Meredith shoved her out barefoot and locked the door.

That was the moment Lily remembered the emergency watch Nathan had given her.
