Chapter 3 - THE VIDEOS

There were four useful recordings from the party.
Not one perfect cinematic angle.
Four imperfect ones.
The first showed Theodora lifting Marcellus.
No sound initially.
The second captured her sentence.
“Your sister deserved the first grandchild. Not you.”
The third showed me moving toward her.
Then my sister stepping sideways into my path.
Clear.
Intentional.
She did not accidentally occupy the space.
She watched me move and blocked me.
Then the release.
One video captured Theodora’s hands.
That mattered most.
Her fingers did not lose grip.
They separated.
Opened.
Then Marcellus fell.
The phone jerked downward because the guest screamed.
The next frame showed Dad diving.
Another phone captured the catch from farther away.
Dad’s arms around the baby.
His shoulder hitting grass.
The fire pit behind them.
Then my scream.
“Dad!”
The fourth recording captured Dad handing Marcellus to me.
Then Dad’s slap.
Clear.
No hiding.
That recording would later help and hurt us in different cases.
Then Theodora’s words:
“It was an accident. Nobody will believe you.”
The video caught those too.
Her defense changed within forty-eight hours.
Her lawyer said:
“Theodora intended to transfer the child toward her older daughter and misjudged the handoff.”
No longer:
He slipped.
Now:
Handoff.
Then:
The fire pit merely happened to be below the space.
That sentence made me nauseous.
Why hand a six-week-old over fire?
No good answer.
Then my sister’s statement.
She admitted blocking me.
Why?
“Mom told me Lissette was going to grab Marcellus and make a scene.”
I stared at the transcript.
What scene?
A mother retrieving her infant?
My sister said:
“Theodora said she wanted to demonstrate that Lissette panics whenever anyone else handles him.”
There.
A demonstration.
Did my sister know the demonstration involved the fire pit?
She said no.
Did she know Theodora would release him?
No.
Did she believe she was supposed to catch him?
She hesitated.
Then:
“I thought Mom might hand him to me.”
Important.
Not drop.
Then:
“Why block Lissette?”
“Because Mom said if Lissette interrupted, the whole point would be lost.”
The point.
What point?
That I was possessive.
Controlling.
Unable to tolerate other caregivers.
My own sister had agreed to help prove it.
Not necessarily by risking Marcellus.
Still.
She had participated in a coercive setup involving my child.
I cried when I read that.
May you like
Not because I thought she wanted him burned.
Because she had decided my maternal boundary was a behavior problem needing public correction.
