Chapter 8 - Northline

His name was Adrian Moss.

Forty.

Former co-owner of Northline Event Works.

He contacted Gwendolyn after news of the canceled wedding reached mutual friends.

Not tabloids.

No national scandal.

A wedding with two hundred guests creates gossip efficiently enough.

Adrian told Gwendolyn:

“You need to know Thayer tried to borrow money privately.”

She asked:

“Against what?”

“He didn’t tell me at first.”

Then he sent screenshots.

Two weeks before wedding:

THAYER:

I can bridge the settlement Monday.

ADRIAN:

How?

THAYER:

Collateral.

ADRIAN:

What collateral? You sold the truck.

THAYER:

Jewelry.

Adrian:

Yours?

No answer for six minutes.

Then:

THAYER:

Family.

Adrian:

Whose family?

THAYER:

Soon mine.

That phrase made Gwendolyn physically ill.

Then:

ADRIAN:

Does she know?

THAYER:

She knows I’m handling Northline.

Not answer.

Adrian:

Do not do anything stupid.

Thayer:

Sixty days. Equipment sale clears. I redeem. Nobody gets hurt.

There.

Temporary.

His self-justification.

He apparently expected to sell remaining Northline inventory shares or collect a receivable within sixty days.

Was that realistic?

Adrian said maybe.

A buyer had expressed interest.

Not guaranteed.

Thayer was not planning to disappear with the ring forever.

He planned to pledge it without permission, then redeem it before anybody discovered.

Still theft/fraud territory.

Then Adrian’s next message:

What are you giving them while they hold it?

Thayer:

Original.

Adrian:

And Gwen?

Thayer:

Copy.

The room went silent when I read that.

There.

Not yet every detail.

Enough.

Gwendolyn closed her laptop.

No tears.

Just:

“Okay.”

I said nothing.

She reopened.

Next:

ADRIAN:

You had a copy made?

THAYER:

Yes.

ADRIAN:

You’re insane.

THAYER:

It looks the same unless someone checks inside.

The missing engraving.

Then:

ADRIAN:

What if Estelle notices?

THAYER:

She won’t. Ring goes back in box after reception. I collect it later when we pack.

There.

The plan.

Take the real ring before ceremony.

Use or insert replica for wedding.

Return replica to Estelle’s box after reception.

Later retrieve original from wherever he hid it.

Take it to lender Monday.

Redeem within sixty days.

If everything went perfectly, Estelle might never know.

But something had gone wrong before the ceremony.

He removed the real ring.

Had the replica nearby.

Maybe he had not yet completed the switch.

Percival saw him.

Then the ring was noticed missing before he could place the copy.

That created panic.

Adrian’s final relevant screenshot came the morning of the wedding.

THAYER:

Kid keeps orbiting bridal setup.

ADRIAN:

What kid?

THAYER:

Gwen’s nephew.

ADRIAN:

So?

THAYER:

Nothing. Just makes me nervous.

Nothing explicit.

No:

Perfect scapegoat.

But he had already seeded Estelle.

He had already moved Percival’s place-card display.

He knew Percival would be near the table.

Then he watched Estelle accuse him.

And did not speak.

Gwendolyn looked at me.

“Maybe he didn’t plan to frame Percy.”

“Maybe not from the start.”

“But once Mom started?”

I nodded.

“He used it.”

That was the uglier truth.

Sometimes a person does not build the trap.

They simply see someone else step into it and decide silence is useful.

The central secret was nearly complete.

One question remained:

May you like

Why had Thayer moved the ring before the ceremony instead of simply switching it later?

The answer came from the wedding photographer.
