Chapter 26 - The Ring Comes Out

The emerald ring left the bank three years after the canceled wedding.

Not for another marriage.

For an appraisal renewal.

Insurance required updated valuation.

Estelle asked if I would accompany her.

Gwendolyn came too.

Percival, now nine, asked:

“Can I?”

I looked at Estelle.

She said:

“If you want.”

At the jeweler, the ring sat under bright light.

The same shop that had made the replica.

Different emotional weather.

The jeweler examined the stones.

Checked engraving.

E.B. 1954.

Confirmed condition.

Then Percival leaned closer.

“Can I hold?”

Every adult went still.

He noticed.

His face changed.

“Never mind.”

My chest tightened.

Estelle spoke first.

“You may hold it if the jeweler says it’s safe.”

The jeweler smiled.

“Over the tray.”

Percival held out his palm.

The ring was placed there.

He stared at the emerald.

“That’s all?”

Gwendolyn laughed.

“What did you expect?”

“Bigger.”

Of course.

Forty-two thousand dollars sounds enormous to a child.

The ring looked tiny.

He handed it back after maybe five seconds.

No one checked his pockets.

No one counted stones.

No one watched him like a suspect.

That mattered.

Outside, Estelle said:

“I’m glad you came.”

Percival shrugged.

“Ring okay.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“I like airplanes more.”

Better investment, emotionally.

The ring returned to bank.

Percival forgot about it by dinner.

That was recovery too.

An object that had once rearranged the entire family became boring again.
