Chapter 15 - Diane’s Plea
Diane pleaded guilty.
Misdemeanor battery.
At sentencing, the prosecutor read Emma’s short impact statement with her permission.
Not dramatic.
One paragraph.
I was reaching for my birthday cake. Grandma hit me and said there was no celebration because there was no son. I thought she meant I was the wrong kind of grandchild.
That was enough.
Diane looked down.
Her attorney emphasized:
No prior record.
No serious injury.
Immediate family conflict.
Counseling begun.
The judge sentenced:
Twelve months probation.
Thirty hours community service.
No unsupervised contact with Emma or Lily unless parents and therapeutic professionals later approved.
Completion of family-violence/boundaries education.
No jail.
Then Diane spoke.
“I should not have struck Emma.”
Good.
Then:
“I was angry about matters that had nothing to do with her.”
Better.
Then:
“I have spent too much of my life believing sons preserve families and daughters leave them.”
Silence.
“My granddaughter did not create that belief.”
There.
No request for forgiveness.
Good.
Outside court, she tried to approach me.
Her lawyer stopped her.
