Chapter 23 - THREE TODDLERS

The triplets were fourteen months old.

Walking badly.

Lucy quickest.

Mae cautious.

Elise loud.

They did not know Eleanor.

To them, she was a woman in a quiet playroom.

No grandmother title at first.

Therapist introduced:

“This is Eleanor.”

Noah attended only because he asked.

Adrian beside me.

Vanessa absent.

Good.

Eleanor sat on floor.

No jewelry except wedding ring? Arthur dead but perhaps she wore it. Fine.

Lucy approached first.

Of course.

She handed Eleanor a plastic cup.

Eleanor took it.

“Thank you.”

Mae stayed beside me.

I watched Eleanor’s eyes.

Did they linger?

Maybe.

I could not trust my own nervous system.

Elise crawled into the middle and screamed at a toy.

Eleanor laughed softly.

No:

My babies.

No:

Grandma.

Good.

Then Mae walked forward.

Stopped.

Looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor did not reach.

Mae touched her knee.

Then walked away.

I exhaled.

The therapist noticed.

Later:

“You were watching Mae.”

“Yes.”

“Did Eleanor behave differently?”

“No.”

Good.

My fear did not become evidence.

Then Noah asked Eleanor:

“Do they know what you did?”

“No.”

“Will you tell?”

“When they’re old enough, if your parents and their therapist think I should.”

Good.

“Not lie?”

“No.”

Then Lucy shoved toy at Eleanor’s face.

Meeting nearly ended in laughter.

Forty minutes.

No incident.

At end, therapist said:

“Eleanor, would you like to say goodbye?”

She said:

“Goodbye, Lucy. Goodbye, Mae. Goodbye, Elise.”

Same order as birth? Normal.

No chosen child.

Then:

“Goodbye, Noah.”

Noah waved.

No hugs requested.

Good.

Outside I vomited in the parking lot.

Anxiety.

Not illness.

Adrian held my hair.

Romantic.

Then:

“Was this too soon?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do we stop?”

“Not because I threw up.”

Good.

We waited.

No second visit for six weeks.

Then Vanessa’s pregnancy.

Twenty-eight weeks.

Doing well after earlier previa concern resolved? Placenta moved away from cervix as pregnancy progressed. Good.

Baby girl.

She named her Grace.

No trust meaning.

Eleanor bought nothing without asking.

She asked Vanessa:

“Can I buy crib?”

Vanessa said:

“No. Claire gave me theirs.”

We had three.

One spare? We had three, maybe transition to cribs. Fine.

Eleanor said:

“Okay.”

Then one related family tension.

Eleanor wanted to be in delivery room.

Vanessa said no.

Only partner and doula.

Eleanor cried.

Still accepted.

Growth under pressure.

Then Whitmore employee trust had first major governance vote after Meridian.

A supplier merger.

Not family.

They voted.

Company survived.

No chaos.

Arthur’s design worked.

Adrian smiled when he told me.

“Mom would hate how boring it is.”

“Maybe she’ll learn.”

Then Eleanor received first annual report with no advisory seat.

She called Adrian:

“I felt irrelevant.”

He said:

“You are allowed to feel irrelevant to a decision you do not own.”

Harsh.

Healthy.

She did not hang up.

Then second triplet visit.

This time Eleanor brought one approved board book.

One.

Not three.

Why one?

Therapist advised shared object.

No ranking.

She read.

Children climbed over her.

Mae bit page.

Eleanor laughed.

Good.

Then family court scheduled final contact order.

Would visits remain therapeutic?

Move to supervised family visits?

No unsupervised yet.

Evaluator recommended:

Monthly supervised two-hour contact, review after one year.

No overnights.

No medical decision authority.

No access to school or hospital records.

No financial gifts above modest threshold without parental approval.

No trust or inheritance discussion.

Eleanor agreed.

I agreed.

Adrian agreed.

The court planned final order after Vanessa’s delivery because family availability.

No urgency.

Then Vanessa went into labor at thirty-nine weeks.

Healthy pregnancy.

Eleanor waited at home.

No hospital badge.

No family office.

No unauthorized support form.

The contrast was almost painful.

Vanessa’s daughter was born.

May you like

Grace.

And this time Eleanor had to learn how to become a grandmother by invitation.
