Chapter 9 - THE BIRTHDAY PLAN
The recovered video was recorded in Sabrina’s kitchen.
Diane sat at the table.
Sabrina stood by the counter.
No children visible.
Date:
Two nights before Bella’s party.
Sabrina:
“What if Natalie just takes her and leaves?”
Diane:
“She won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because you’ll do it in front of everyone.”
“Do what?”
“Something she can’t ignore.”
Sabrina laughed nervously.
“I’m not hitting Grace.”
“No.”
“Then?”
Diane looked toward a pair of salon scissors on the counter.
“Grace needs a haircut anyway.”
My stomach turned.
Sabrina:
“She’ll kill me.”
Diane:
“She’ll lose control.”
“And then?”
“Then we have witnesses.”
No mention of trust.
No mention of money.
But intent to provoke.
Sabrina hesitated.
“What if Connor records?”
“Take his tablet.”
They tried.
Connor had hidden it under his shirt earlier because he heard them discussing videos.
At the party, he started recording before I arrived.
The full birthday footage contained something my memory missed.
While Diane pinned Grace, Sabrina whispered:
“Where’s your psycho mommy now?”
Grace screamed louder.
Diane said:
“Keep going.”
Sabrina:
“She’s going to freak.”
Diane:
“That’s the point.”
Then I entered.
Everything afterward matched my memory.
Slap.
Scissors.
My rage.
Their plan worked.
Partly.
They obtained evidence of me becoming violent.
They also created better evidence of themselves manufacturing the provocation.
The guardianship petition collapsed as an emergency strategy.
But the financial motive remained under seal until the trust hearing.
North Coast had completed an audit.
Helen Marsh requested that I not receive final conclusions early.
“Why?”
“To prevent family witnesses coordinating around what we found.”
“I’m not coordinating with them.”
“You are still a party.”
Fine.
Another discovery came from Bright Harbor.
Dr. Voss had received an email from Diane:
After Saturday we expect a maternal violence incident. Can you update your assessment once police records exist?
Voss replied:
I cannot diagnose parenting capacity from an unrelated adult conflict. Grace requires direct evaluation and collateral from neutral sources.
That helped him.
He had accepted biased videos but resisted the requested leap.
His licensing board later reviewed his initial practices.
No criminal conspiracy evidence yet.
Sabrina responded:
Then we’ll find someone who understands high-conflict families.
They had a second clinician lined up.
Dr. Erica Sloan.
She never received the case because police intervened.
Her intake form had already been filled out.

One contained Grace’s trust instrument.
One contained reimbursement requests from Diane and Sabrina.
Helen Marsh looked at me.
“This is going to be painful.”
“More than the videos?”
“In a different way.”
“What is the trust worth?”
For the first time, she answered.
“Approximately eighteen-point-seven million dollars, depending on private-company valuation.”
I stared.
I had known Grace was secure.
Not that secure.
Then Helen continued:

“And your mother and sister have been attempting to position themselves around nearly six million dollars of care-related authority.”
The central secret was finally ready to open.
