Chapter 16 - DIANE’S TRIAL

Diane’s trial lasted four weeks.

The prosecution did not turn her into a witch.

They showed sequence.

Trust debt.

House transfer.

Care company.

Behavior videos.

Guardianship draft.

Clinical report.

Birthday planning.

Restraint.

My retaliation.

The judge instructed jurors repeatedly:

My guilt did not prove hers.

Sabrina’s plea did not automatically prove Diane’s counts.

Each element separately.

Connor testified for twenty-two minutes by closed-circuit arrangement.

He authenticated the tablet.

The prosecutor asked:

“Why did you record?”

“Because Mom kept saying Grace was bad and I thought she was making her bad.”

Children sometimes summarize cases better than lawyers.

Diane’s attorney asked:

“Did you dislike your mother during this period?”

“Yes.”

“Were you trying to get her in trouble?”

“No.”

“You hid the tablet.”

“Yes.”

“You disobeyed.”

“Yes.”

Connor looked at the camera.

“Because they were hurting Grace.”

No drama.

Just answer.

Bella testified less.

She described hiding the doll.

Diane’s instructions.

Freezing during the haircut.

She cried.

Court stopped for break.

No one rushed her.

Sabrina testified under plea.

Diane’s attorney attacked her debt, lies, incentive for reduced sentence.

All legitimate.

Texts supported key parts.

I testified.

My cross-examination centered my retaliation.

“You cut Sabrina’s hair.”

“Yes.”

“You pinned her.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted revenge.”

“Yes.”

“You have a temper.”

“I acted violently that day.”

“Did Diane make your hand move?”

“No.”

Important.

The prosecutor later asked:

“Did your battery cause the guardianship petition to exist eleven days earlier?”

“No.”

“Cause Rosebridge?”

“No.”

“Cause Bright Path?”

“No.”

“Cause the edited videos?”

“No.”

The case stayed separate.

Diane testified.

She admitted restraining Grace during the haircut.

Called it helping Sabrina trim an unruly child.

The video of Grace screaming:

No! Please stop cutting my hair!

destroyed any claim of consent.

Diane admitted wanting me angry.

Denied expecting violence.

The jury deliberated five days.
