Chapter 15 - THE WORK I MISSED

My company did not collapse because I stopped traveling for six weeks.
That annoyed me.
I had built part of my identity around being indispensable.
My COO handled three trips.
A partner closed a deal.
The building remained standing.
Elodie noticed.
“Daddy no airplane.”
“For a while.”
“Because me?”
“No.”
That question again.
“Because I changed my schedule.”
“Because hospital?”
“Partly.”
Her eyes lowered.
I corrected.
“My choice.”
Good.
Then eventually:
“I have to go to Chicago for one night.”
She froze.
“Grandma?”
“No.”
“Mia?”
“Yes. And Aunt Rebecca? Wait I don't have sister. Keep Mia plus my longtime friend Claire? Better not. Mia stays overnight? Licensed caregiver can. Also my neighbor/friend Henry? Let's avoid. Mia is approved overnight caregiver.”
“Can call?”
“Anytime.”
“Even meeting?”
“Yes.”
“Will you answer?”
“If I’m speaking, Mia can text URGENT and I step out.”
She liked specific.
Trip came.
I went.
Called at bedtime.
Elodie showed me Mr. Patches.
Breathing fine.
Medication given.
App showed dose, but now I did not rely only on checkmark.
Mia sent photo of inhaler counter? That risks obsession. No.
Trust professionals too.
I did not need surveillance replacing family control.
I came home next afternoon.
Nothing happened.
That trip mattered.

Protection did not require me to become afraid of distance.
It required systems that did not depend on one person’s hidden judgment.
