Chapter 8 - THE PACKET WITH TWO SIGNATURES

Harriet’s packet arrived sealed electronically through the court.
I did not get a special preview.
First document:
Nomination of Guardian for Minor Child.
Tavian Vale.
Signed.
Notarized.
Witnessed.
Primary nominee:
Rhydian Vale.
Alternate nominee:
Tavian’s longtime friend Marcus Hale.
Ulric was not listed.
Then a separate letter.
Not legally controlling.
Context only.
Tavian wrote:
I love both my brothers.
I am choosing Rhydian as first nominee because I believe Esmond is calmer around him and because Rhydian has consistently separated discipline from fear.
That sentence hit.
Then:
Ulric has provided substantial help during my illness. I am grateful.
Good.
Then:
I have also observed Ulric use intimidation when frustrated.
One incident:
Punching the kitchen cabinet after Esmond spilled milk.
Another:
Shouting at Esmond for crying during a medical appointment.
No physical injury.
Then:
I have asked Ulric to complete anger counseling before I would consider him primary guardian.
Did Ulric know?
Attached email.
Tavian to Ulric:
I am not naming you primary guardian unless you deal with the anger.
Ulric:
You’re serious?
Tavian:
Yes.
Ulric:
After everything I’ve done?
Tavian:
This is not payment.
There.
The same family disease:
Care as entitlement.
Then Ulric:
Rhydian gets to show up twice a month and win.
Tavian:
This is not a contest.
Another echo.
Then Tavian’s guardian letter said:
If Rhydian cannot or will not serve, use the alternate. I do not want Esmond placed with Ulric merely because he is the oldest brother unless a court independently determines that is safe.
Clear.
Not absolute.
Not:
Never let Ulric see him.
Just:
Do not default to hierarchy.
Then the emergency phone.
Tavian’s instruction sheet attached.
Keep basic phone charged.
Saved contact Rhydian.
Teach Esmond:
If scared and no trusted adult is helping, call.
No secret code.
No hidden recording.
Just safety.
Then Harriet’s note:
Tavian signed after independent consultation.
No Rhydian present.
I had not known the final document existed.
That strengthened authenticity.
Still, Chapter Ten had not arrived yet.
Because Ulric’s lawyer challenged whether Tavian changed his mind afterward.
May you like
They claimed a later handwritten note existed.
And for three days, we did not know whether that was true.
