Chapter 15 - THIRTY-SEVEN WEEKS

At thirty-seven weeks, my blood pressure rose.
Not crisis.
Enough for monitoring.
My doctor said:
“We are watching.”
No one blamed stress scientifically without basis.
Pregnancy changes.
Maybe stress contributed.
Maybe not.
We followed medicine.
Then baby movement decreased one evening.
I panicked.
Went to hospital.
Monitoring reassuring.
Baby had changed position.
Good.
My husband was notified after admission because we had agreed.
He asked to come.
I said no.
He accepted.
That mattered.
Clarissa heard through him.
Sent no message.
Also mattered.
Then financial hearing.
Temporary spousal support was modest because I had income.
Child support would start after birth depending parenting schedule.
Joint savings preserved.
My husband’s premarital family-company shares remained his.
No one made me rich.
No one made me penniless.
Facts reduced Clarissa’s threat to what it had always been:
A psychological weapon built from family wealth.
Then Dad completed anger classes.
Case dismissed after diversion.
He framed certificate.
I said:
“Take that down.”
He laughed.
“It’s growth.”
“It’s ridiculous.”
He put it in a drawer.
Good.
Then Clarissa completed her own program.
No direct reconciliation.
Her attorney notified compliance.
Fine.
Then company ethics review.
My husband admitted he used personal, not company, resources.
No corporate fraud.
Board found his private conduct reflected poor judgment but not misuse of company assets.
COO promotion paused for at least one year.
Employment continued.
Clarissa could not override board.
Real consequence.
He lost status.
Not livelihood.
Then he moved out of Clarissa’s house? He had been living in Clarissa-owned marital home after I left. He chose to rent a small apartment.
That surprised me.
Why?
Through mediator:
“I need a place that isn’t hers.”
Good.
Too late for marriage.
Useful for parenting.
He moved.
No nursery there yet.
Then he asked:
“Can I have some baby things?”
We had duplicates from shower.
I sent:
Portable bassinet.
Diapers.
Changing mat.
No emotional message.
Preparing his home did not mean approving unsupervised custody immediately.
It meant recognizing fatherhood.
Hard.
Necessary.
Then Clarissa learned he moved.
She stopped speaking to him for eleven days.
His choice had a cost.
May you like
He did it anyway.
Maybe he was finally learning.
