CHAP 4 — The Morning at Apex

At 8:12 the next morning, Ethan walked into Apex Development headquarters with a swollen jaw and the arrogance of a man who still believed image could outrun evidence.
He had been released after initial questioning because his attorney arrived fast and because the police were still waiting on full medical documentation. He thought that meant he was safe.
It meant the trap was still closing.
His assistant, Marcy, stood when he entered.
“Mr. Rhodes, the board has been calling.”
“Tell them I’m unavailable.”
“Sir, your system access—”
“I said unavailable.”
He walked into his glass office and froze.
Two police officers were waiting beside his desk.
So was Elaine Porter, Apex’s outside general counsel.
And on his computer screen was a notice from Northstar Private Trust.
Emergency Voting Control Exercised.
Executive Authority Suspended.
All Accounts Frozen Pending Audit.
Ethan stared.
“What is this?”
Elaine’s face was pale.
“Natalie Hayes Rhodes, through Northstar Private Trust, has exercised majority voting control.”
His laugh came out sharp.
“My wife doesn’t own Apex.”
Elaine swallowed.
“Yes, she does.”
“No. I founded this company.”
“You retained operational title. Northstar retained controlling voting equity under the restructuring agreement signed two years ago.”
He looked at the police.
Then the screen.
Then Elaine.
“What do you mean she owns the voting control?”
One officer stepped forward.
“Ethan Rhodes, we have a warrant for your arrest related to aggravated domestic assault, strangulation, and evidence tampering.”
Ethan backed away.
“No. This is a setup.”
The second officer moved behind him.
His phone began vibrating.
Bank alert.
Corporate card suspended.
Personal line of credit frozen.
Vehicle access disabled.
Board emergency meeting scheduled.
Audit team arriving.
Ethan’s face twisted.
“Unfreeze my accounts!”
Elaine said quietly, “I can’t.”
“I built this place!”
“No,” she said, and something like anger entered her voice. “You stood in front of it.”
The officers turned him toward the desk.
He fought then.
Not bravely.
Desperately.
They slammed him against the polished surface he had once used to sign contracts funded by my hidden control.
“Get your hands off me!” he screamed. “Do you know who I am?”
One officer cuffed him.
“Yes,” he said. “That’s why we’re here.”
Employees watched from the hallway. Some looked shocked. Some looked ashamed. A few looked relieved.
Later, Marcy would tell investigators that Ethan had ordered her to delete emails about vendor payments.
She had not.
She had copied them.
By noon, the board removed Ethan as CEO pending investigation. By two, the audit team found enough irregularities to expand the review. By five, three vendors had agreed to cooperate.
The public statement was short.
Apex Development has suspended Ethan Rhodes following serious allegations and financial irregularities. Control has been assumed by Northstar Private Trust to protect employees, investors, and ongoing projects.
Ethan had spent years telling people I was ornamental.
A wife.
A quiet face at fundraisers.
A woman too fragile for business.
By the end of that day, every investor in the city knew the truth.

I had been the structure holding his empire upright.
And I had finally let go.
