CHAP 2 — The Doctor Who Knew

Liam did not speak at first.

That was what frightened me.

My brother had been loud our whole lives. Loud when he laughed. Loud when he argued. Loud when he found me crying at sixteen because a boy humiliated me at school and he wanted the boy’s address.

But in that ER hallway, Liam went silent.

His eyes moved clinically over my body.

Split lip.

Swollen cheekbone.

Bruising beneath the jaw.

Fresh finger marks circling my throat.

Defensive bruises along both forearms.

One wrist already swelling.

Rib tenderness.

Blood dried near my hairline.

Liam’s hand hovered above my throat without touching.

Then his face changed.

Not into panic.

Into certainty.

“She didn’t fall,” he whispered.

Ethan’s smile thinned.

“Doctor, with respect, my wife has had a very emotional night.”

Liam turned his head slowly.

The nurse beside him froze.

“Secure this unit,” Liam said.

His voice was calm enough to be terrifying.

Then he looked at the charge nurse.

“Call the police. Immediately.”

Ethan laughed once.

“Police? That’s completely unnecessary.”

Liam stepped closer to him.

“You brought an unconscious woman into my ER with strangulation marks and patterned injuries.”

Ethan’s eyes flicked toward the nurses.

There it was.

The first crack.

He had not expected anyone to name the evidence out loud.

“She slipped,” he repeated. “In the shower.”

Liam’s jaw tightened.

“My sister does not have pantry-door impact bruising from a shower.”

Ethan blinked.

“Sister?”

The word hung in the corridor.

I saw the exact moment Ethan understood.

The chief doctor was not a stranger.

The physician studying my injuries was the one person who had known my fear before Ethan could explain it away.

“Liam,” Ethan began smoothly, changing tactics. “This is a family issue.”

Liam’s blue-gloved fist struck Ethan across the jaw.

The sound cracked through the hallway.

Ethan’s head snapped back. Nurses screamed. A police officer near the ambulance bay rushed forward. Liam did not hit him again. He simply stood there, breathing once through his nose, eyes cold as winter.

The officer grabbed Ethan before he could recover.

Ethan shouted, “He assaulted me!”

Liam held up both hands.

“Yes,” he said. “And now you can add that to the report after we document what you did to my sister.”

The officer looked at my injuries.

Then at Ethan.

Then at Liam.

“Sir, step back.”

Liam stepped back.

But his eyes never left Ethan.

Ethan’s face had gone red with shock and humiliation. Blood marked the corner of his mouth. For the first time since I had known him, he looked less like a man in control and more like a boy caught breaking something expensive.

I wanted to speak.

I wanted to say Liam’s name.

Instead, darkness pulled at the edges of the room.

The last thing I heard before slipping under again was my brother’s voice beside me, low and shaking.

“Natalie, I’ve got you now.”
