Chapter 1 - CODE RED

Mia was already crying when I reached her.
Her scream carried over the music, over the waves slapping beneath the dock, over the shocked voices of nearly two hundred wedding guests.
I dropped to my knees.
“Mia.”
My daughter lay twisted beside the white flower arch at the edge of the dock. One knee was scraped. Both bare legs were streaked with dirt. Older yellow-green bruises stood out beneath the fresh red marks.
Her eyes found mine.
“Mommy.”
I pulled her carefully against my chest.
“Don’t move your legs yet.”
Sarah Bennett stood three feet away in a lace wedding gown with the train ripped and stained from the commotion. Her face was flushed with anger.
Greg stood farther back near the reception pavilion.
Helen and Robert were coming toward us.
“Somebody call a medic!” I shouted. “My daughter is hurt!”
Several guests reached for phones.
Helen reached me first.
Not Mia.
Me.
Her palm struck my cheek.
My head snapped sideways.
The diamond stud in my ear cut the skin behind it.
“Stop ruining her big day, you jealous loser!”
For half a second, I forgot how to breathe.
My own mother had hit me in front of my injured child.
Mia began sobbing harder.
“Mommy.”
“I’m here.”
Robert crouched.
“Let me look at her.”
He reached toward Mia’s face.
She recoiled so violently that her head struck my collarbone.
“No!”
His fingers closed briefly around her jaw.
“Stop squirming.”
I shoved his hand away.
“Don’t touch her.”
“Elena, she needs checking.”
“By a medic.”
“You are making this worse.”
Maybe that sentence would once have worked.
Not anymore.
I looked at Mia.
Then Sarah.
Then Helen.
Then Robert.
Something inside me went cold.
I wiped the blood from my lip.
I rose carefully with Mia in my arms.
My satin dress was stained from the dock.
“Mommy hurts,” Mia whispered.
“I know.”
Sarah lifted both hands.
“She ran into me, Elena. Look at my dress.”
I looked at the child.
Then at the dress.
The order of importance became obvious.
I took out my phone.
Helen’s expression changed slightly.
“What are you doing?”
I called Marcus Vale.
He answered before the second ring.
“Elena?”
I put him on speaker.
“Marcus. Code Red.”
Silence.
Then:
“Confirm level.”
“Full event shutdown. Medical response. Preserve all cameras. Nobody associated with the Bennett wedding leaves the island until law enforcement clears departure.”
Greg came toward us.
“Elena.”
Marcus answered:
“Confirmed.”
Music stopped mid-song.
The pavilion lights changed from warm gold to bright white emergency illumination.
The marina gates locked into controlled-access mode.
Two uniformed resort officers stepped toward Sarah.
Guests began backing away.
Greg stared at me.
“Elena… what did you just do?”
I adjusted Mia against my chest.
“She’s four.”
“What?”
“You’re asking about your wedding while my daughter is bleeding.”
“I didn’t touch her.”
“I didn’t say you did.”
That frightened him.
Helen stepped forward.
“You have no authority to cancel anything.”
Marcus’s voice remained audible through my phone.
“Mrs. Hale, security authority has already transferred under Code Red.”
My mother went pale.
Robert looked toward the resort officers.
Not confused.
Calculating.
I started toward the medical station.
Greg followed one step.
“Who gave you the right to lock down this island?”
I stopped.
I looked at Sarah’s ruined gown.
At Helen’s shaking wine hand.
At Robert.
Then back at Greg.
“Do you have any idea whose island you’re standing on?”
Nobody answered.
I walked away.
Behind me, one of the officers called:
“Ms. Bennett, please remain where you are.”
Sarah snapped:
“This is my wedding!”
Mia tightened her arms around my neck.
Then she whispered words only I heard.
“Mommy… Grandma said Sarah had to make me fall.”
I almost stopped walking.
May you like
I didn’t.
Because if I turned around then, I was afraid of what I might do.
