Chapter 26 - LEO BECOMES A FATHER

Leo became a father first.
Twins.
Of course.
I laughed for approximately ten minutes when he told me.
His wife, Maya, did not appreciate that initially.
Then she joined.
At the hospital, I stood outside until invited.
No surprise visit.
No assuming grandmother status opened doors.
Leo texted:
Mom, come in.
I entered.
Two babies.
One in each bassinet.
My body remembered before my mind.
Bramley crossing the room.
Leo crying.
My incision.
My useless legs.
Then Maya asked:
“Want to hold her?”
I looked at Leo.
Then Maya.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
I lifted my granddaughter.
Carefully.
No possession.
Permission.
Leo watched me.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You went weird.”
“Family tradition.”
He smiled.
Then:
“Does this activate anything?”
I stared.
“What?”
“Trust.”
I almost threw a pillow.
“No.”
He laughed.
The modernized descendant trust already existed.
No new corporate control triggered by babies.
Economic beneficiary updates.
Administrative.
Boring.
Exactly what we wanted.
Maya said:
“You people are insane.”
“Historically.”
Later Leo asked me privately:
“Do you understand Grandpa at all now?”
“Yes.”
He looked surprised.
“Having grandchildren made you understand him?”
“No. It made me understand how wrong he was.”
I looked through the nursery window.
Love came instantly.
Power did not.
Wanting to protect a baby did not grant ownership over the mother.
Grandparenthood expanded relationship.
Not authority.
May you like
That distinction felt obvious.
Bramley had spent a lifetime failing to see it.
