Chapter 4 - THANKSGIVING AT THE VALE ESTATE

The Vale estate occupied fourteen acres above the Potomac River.

Stone walls.

Black iron gates.

A dining room designed for thirty.

A private security system connected to Vale Meridian’s command network.

By six Thanksgiving evening, police and federal agents had warrants for the residence, security servers, vehicles, phones, and corporate devices tied to the assault, forgery, and attempted interference at the hospital.

Because the estate contained registered firearms and private guards, tactical officers supported the entry.

The operation was not mine.

I learned about it afterward through lawful briefings provided to Chloe’s attorneys.

The Thanksgiving gathering had continued.

Sylvia seated fifteen guests beneath crystal chandeliers while caterers carried turkey, glazed vegetables, and wine into the dining room.

Marcus’s empty chair remained at the head.

Celeste’s place had been moved beside it.

Sylvia told guests Marcus was assisting his emotionally unstable wife.

At 6:14, officers announced themselves at the front entrance.

Estate security refused immediate access.

At 6:16, a guard reported that Sylvia ordered staff to burn “personal papers” in an outdoor furnace.

At 6:18, tactical officers breached a side door authorized by the warrant and secured the building.

No shots were fired.

Guests were separated and identified.

Three attempted to leave through the kitchen.

Sylvia remained seated while officers entered the dining room.

She placed her napkin beside her plate.

“This performance is unnecessary,” she said.

An agent directed her to step away from the table.

“My family built systems your agencies rely on.”

“That does not change the warrant.”

The search lasted fourteen hours.

Investigators recovered Chloe’s pendant from a locked drawer in Sylvia’s bedroom.

Celeste’s fingerprints were later found on the hardware chip.

A laptop in Marcus’s study contained drafts of Chloe’s resignation, medical incapacity declaration, and patent transfer.

The files had been created six months earlier.

The dining-room camera held footage from Thanksgiving Eve, but a forty-minute segment had been deleted.

Technical specialists recovered portions.

The video showed Chloe drinking wine.

Marcus switched her glass while distracting her with a folder.

Sylvia placed a small bottle inside her handbag.

Chloe signed one page, then pulled it back toward herself.

Marcus covered the paper with the menu and guided her hand to another signature line.

The recording did not clearly show the text.

It showed impaired consent.

The study contained the marble bookend with blood traces.

A curtain cord carried fibers consistent with Chloe’s wrists.

Her missing shoe lay beneath a cabinet.

A service-elevator camera recorded Marcus and Sylvia moving Chloe through the garage while she struggled to remain upright.

Celeste followed carrying Chloe’s coat and handbag.

The guests in the library continued drinking.

Some later claimed they believed Chloe had become ill.

None called for medical help.

The garage footage showed Marcus placing Chloe into an SUV at 3:37 a.m.

Sylvia leaned through the passenger door.

“The mother will take her,” she said. “By noon, everyone will believe Chloe left voluntarily.”

Marcus answered, “What if she remembers?”

Sylvia said, “Then we give the world the version we recorded.”

The tactical search also uncovered a concealed room behind the estate’s wine storage.

Inside were backup servers, document scanners, medical files, and private reports concerning Vale Meridian employees.

Chloe had a folder.

So did I.

My file contained twenty years of professional history, travel records, retirement information, and photographs of my home.

They had researched me.

The first page read:

ELEANOR HAYES — FORMER FEDERAL PROSECUTOR. HIGH RETALIATION RISK IF ACTIVATED.

Sylvia knew exactly who I was.

She had allowed Marcus to underestimate me.

Another folder contained Dr. Brooks’s hospital schedule and personal address.

The medical interference had been planned before Chloe reached the hospital.

Investigators also found files concerning three women connected to Marcus before Chloe.

Hannah Keene.

Former fiancée.

Rebecca Moss.

Executive assistant.

Anna Vale.

First wife.

Chloe had never known Marcus had been married.

Public biographies described him as a first-time husband.

The room contained copies of Anna’s sealed divorce documents, psychiatric evaluations, and photographs of injuries around her neck.

A death certificate lay beneath them.

Anna Vale had died in a car accident eight years earlier.

The search team found a second blood sample on the basement floor.

It did not belong to Chloe.

Preliminary database analysis linked it to a woman reported missing three months earlier.

Rebecca Moss.

The executive assistant.

She had last been seen leaving Vale Meridian headquarters after raising concerns about Atlas testing.

Sylvia was detained for questioning and later charged with evidence destruction and obstruction while prosecutors reviewed assault and conspiracy counts.

Marcus remained in custody pending a formal hearing.

Celeste was still outside the country.

The estate guests hired lawyers.

Vale Meridian’s stockholder confidence collapsed.

At midnight, Dr. Brooks entered Chloe’s room with new imaging results.

Her lung injury remained stable.

The neck trauma showed no spinal fracture.

She could recover physically with time.

I thought the news would comfort her.

Instead, Chloe stared at the ceiling.

“Anna,” she whispered.

“You did not know.”

“He told me I was the first woman he ever trusted.”

“You did not know.”

“I slept in her house.”

The Vale estate had belonged to Anna’s family before her marriage to Marcus.

Property records showed Anna transferred it into a marital trust two months before her death.

Marcus inherited control.

Chloe closed her eyes.

“Mom, what happened to her?”

The question could not be answered by assumption.

Then Naomi called.

Canadian border officials had located Celeste at a private clinic outside Toronto.

She had checked in under another name with bruises around her throat.

Celeste told authorities Marcus tried to kill her before sending her away.
