Chapter 22 - ROMY ASKS ABOUT INHERITANCE
Romy heard the word from a relative.
“What is inheritance?”
We were eating pancakes.
Excellent setting for estate law.
“Things someone leaves after they die.”
“Like horse?”
“Yes.”
“Like money?”
“Sometimes.”
“Grandpa left you money?”
“Yes.”
“And Uncle?”
“Yes.”
“Then why Uncle say he take yours?”
I stared.
Children hear everything.
“He was angry and thought he had more control than he did.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“Key stopped him?”
“No.”
She sighed.
“You always say no about key.”
“Because the key didn’t have magic.”
“What did?”
“Lawyers.”
She laughed so hard milk came out her nose.
Fair.
Then I explained in five-year-old terms.
Grandpa owned part of a company.
I already owned part too.
Paperwork got messed up.
Some of it was dishonest.
Adults checked records.
Then rules were corrected.
