Chapter 26 - DINNER WITHOUT PERMISSION

Mother’s eighty-second birthday dinner had twelve people.
No hundred-person ballroom.
No press.
Daphne came in nursing scrubs because she worked that day.
Maribel came for dessert only, at Mother’s invitation.
I sat beside Mother.
She wore pearls.
Her own.
No chain.
Dinner started late because Mother talked too long.
No one complained.
When the waiter served the main course, Mother asked for extra potatoes.
The waiter gave them.
No one looked at me.
Good.
Then she asked for wine.
Dr. Levin had said one small glass was fine.
I started to comment.
She raised one eyebrow.
I shut up.
Progress.
Maribel arrived after plates were cleared.
She greeted Mother.
Then me.
“Leandro.”
“Maribel.”
No hostility.
No intimacy.
Years had done their work.
She handed Mother a small wrapped box.
Inside:
A silver dessert fork engraved with E.C.
Mother laughed.
“This is absurd.”
“You like dessert.”
“I do.”
No property.
No promise.
No money leverage.
A fork.
Then Mother used it for cake.
At one point Daphne told the story of Mother terrorizing nursing-school admissions staff with questions.
Everyone laughed.
No one told the gala story.
Not because secret.
Because it did not have to own every gathering.
Later, Maribel stood to leave.
Mother reached for her hand.
“Thank you for coming.”
“Thank you for inviting me.”
That was all.
No second marriage.
No family restoration.
No return to household authority.
Then Maribel looked at me.
“I’m glad she’s well.”
“So am I.”
She left.
Mother watched.
“Do you hate her?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Do you want us back together?”
“Absolutely not.”
I laughed.
“Why?”
“You were terrible married by the end.”
Accurate.
Then:
“I love her in a strange way.”
“I know.”
Family is not the only relationship capable of surviving in altered form.
Then Mother asked:
“More cake?”
I looked at the server.
She slapped my wrist lightly.
“I was asking you.”
“Yes.”
We split another slice.
No begging.
No permission.
Just sharing.
That night I realized the story no longer had a legal climax waiting.
No hearing.
No audit.
No vote.
No sale.
No capacity review.
May you like
Only the ordinary work of remembering without reenacting.
That was enough.
