Chapter 25 - THE LAST OPEN FILE

Naomi retired.

Traitor.

At our final legal review, she brought one folder.

The elder-abuse case.

Divorce.

Laureate.

Trust modification.

My diversion.

Audit settlements.

Everything closed.

No pending litigation.

No appeal.

No hidden claim.

No unresolved contract.

She asked:

“Do you want the personal copies?”

“Necessary?”

“Some.”

We archived required records professionally.

Shredded duplicates.

No bonfire.

Then I found Maribel’s original Household Support Acknowledgment.

Unsigned.

The document that would have said Mother depended on her.

I read it once.

Then sent it for secure destruction with the duplicates.

No frame.

No trophy.

Then Mother asked:

“Is that all?”

“Yes.”

“Nothing else hidden?”

“No.”

“Boring.”

“Finally.”

Then she asked for dinner.

We went to a small Italian restaurant.

No family property.

No gala.

She ordered lasagna.

Halfway through, she stopped.

“I’m full.”

I felt the old reflex.

Eat more.

You’re too thin.

Then remembered.

“Okay.”

She looked at me.

Smiled.

That okay mattered as much as the second helping years earlier.

Safety is not endless abundance.

It is choice without punishment.
