Chapter 6 - THE LAWYER AT THE FAMILY TABLE

Raymond Sloan had eaten Thanksgiving dinner beside us for eleven years.

He attended Charles’s funeral.

He placed a hand on Daniel’s shoulder and promised to protect the family.

He drafted the documents Margaret later tried to use against us.

The search of his office uncovered two sets of records.

The official Brooks Foundation books showed scholarships, food programs, and housing grants.

The private ledger showed transfers to M.B. Consulting, Sloan Strategic Services, and Bell Wellness Advisory.

M.B. Consulting belonged to Margaret.

Sloan Strategic belonged to Raymond.

Bell Wellness belonged to Dr. Calvin Bell.

Over seven years, they diverted $2.3 million.

Charles discovered unexplained payments shortly before his fatal stroke.

Raymond told him accounting corrections were underway.

Then he concealed the audit.

The Legacy Trust became their replacement source.

If Margaret obtained authority over my daughter, management fees and related contracts could replenish the stolen foundation funds before regulators noticed.

My child was not only an heir.

She was their plan for covering an older theft.

Raymond was arrested for conspiracy, trust fraud, identity theft, forgery, evidence manipulation, and obstruction.

He claimed attorney-client privilege covered his files.

The court appointed a special master to separate legitimate privileged material from evidence of crime.

Procedure slowed the investigation.

It also protected every innocent client whose records shared his office.

Daniel’s company placed him on administrative leave.

A short video from the foyer showed him kicking Margaret’s chair and sending her to the floor. Online accounts described him as a wealthy son attacking his elderly mother.

The longer footage showed the reason.

The company still hired outside counsel to review his conduct.

“I may lose the firm Dad built,” Daniel said.

“You may.”

He looked toward me, perhaps expecting reassurance.

I could not give it automatically.

“You chose force in an emergency,” I said. “The review should determine whether it was justified.”

“You think I assaulted her?”

“I think you protected me. I also think being right about her does not place you above scrutiny.”

He nodded.

“That sounds like you.”

“What does?”

“The version of you Mother spent months trying to erase.”

I did not know whether it was a compliment or an apology.

The probate court considered Margaret’s emergency petition.

Her attorney relied on the property deed, Dr. Bell’s declaration, and Daniel’s recorded violence.

Naomi presented the original trust title, hospital results, hidden cameras, and predated petition.

The judge dismissed Margaret’s request for guardianship and prohibited any filing concerning the baby without prior judicial approval.

The forged deed was suspended pending final invalidation.

The judge did not yet terminate Margaret’s occupancy because the trust required a formal hearing.

She could not return while the no-contact order remained.

The first report from the house’s smart-lock system arrived that afternoon.

Doors had been locked from outside on nine nights when I told Daniel I had misplaced my keys.

The system recorded the code used.

It was Daniel’s master code.

He had been in Chicago during every incident.

Someone had not merely copied his legal signature.

Someone inside our family had been living through his identity.
