Chapter 10 - THE RED PORTFOLIO

Margaret’s east-wing closets contained dozens of boxes, but no red portfolio.

Police had searched for financial records, medication, and electronic devices. A leather folder could have appeared ordinary and remained inside a sealed personal-property container.

The court authorized a second examination.

Investigators opened every transferred box under video.

The portfolio was hidden inside a garment bag beneath Charles’s funeral coat.

Inside were condolence cards, drafts of the obituary, and the carbon-backed sheet from the hospital signing.

Daniel’s signature appeared as an indented impression.

Above it was the original heading:

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF BENEFICIARY REPORTING RIGHTS.

Raymond had used the transferred signature to fabricate the emergency nomination page.

The portfolio also contained a note from Margaret.

Replace before filing. Daniel cannot handle another argument beside Charles.

The legal barrier collapsed.

The probate judge invalidated the nomination, permanently removed Margaret from every approved role, and referred the evidence to prosecutors.

Rosewood Residential Trust terminated Margaret’s occupancy license because of violence, fraud, and medical interference.

The forged deed was formally voided.

The house belonged to the trust for Daniel and me.

Knowing that did not make me want to enter it.

Margaret’s civil claim over the chair was dismissed after the court reviewed the complete video and her own prewritten account.

Our counterclaims continued.

The district attorney added poisoning, coercive control, attempted custodial interference, property fraud, and conspiracy charges.

Raymond’s indictment expanded.

Dr. Bell and Paige entered plea negotiations.

Margaret rejected every offer requiring her to admit she intended to control the baby’s trust.

“She only wanted to protect the Brooks legacy,” her attorney said.

The Brooks legacy had become a phrase adults used when they wanted a child’s future without respecting her parents.

Three weeks passed.

I reached thirty-seven weeks of pregnancy.

The baby remained healthy, though Dr. Chen recommended delivery at the hospital’s secured maternity unit because stress had caused intermittent contractions.

Margaret remained in supervised medical housing.

Then an ambulance transported her to a cardiology appointment.

She never entered the clinic.

Her attorney’s investigator intercepted the vehicle with falsified transfer paperwork.

By the time staff discovered the substitution, Margaret was gone.

A warrant was issued.

Daniel wanted private guards around the apartment.

I agreed to one exterior officer and hospital coordination.

I refused to live behind six armed men.

Fear deserved a plan, not unlimited authority.

At 4:06 the following morning, I woke with lower back pain.

My water broke beside the bed.

Daniel called the hospital while Naomi contacted security.

As we approached the maternity entrance, a license-plate camera triggered an alert.

Margaret’s car had entered the hospital garage twelve minutes earlier.
