The court ordered Mercer Adaptive Technologies to produce the complete safety report.
The company claimed the original file could not be located.
A digital copy had been deleted three weeks earlier using a deceased engineer’s account.
The engineer, Helen Grant, died six months before my father.
Her account should have been disabled.
The deletion occurred from a Mercer rehabilitation clinic.
Security footage at the clinic showed Evelyn entering the records wing that afternoon.
She said she attended a charitable luncheon.
No luncheon occurred.
Samuel remembered Helen Grant.
She designed the StepAssist II pressure sensors and reported unexplained episodes where the device continued applying force after patients attempted to stop.
Most events caused no injury.
Two caused falls.
One patient suffered a fracture.
The company classified the events as user error.
Helen disagreed.
She copied the data before her death and told Samuel she had placed it somewhere “a Mercer woman could not erase.”
No one knew where.
The trust’s sale veto existed specifically to prevent transfer until the second safety file was reviewed.
My father gave that veto to me.
Not because he preferred me over Madison.
Because I had been the first patient harmed by the original system.
He believed I would understand what spreadsheets could hide.
I felt betrayed by his secrecy and burdened by his faith.
The central truth remained incomplete.
Madison and Evelyn wanted my vote removed so Project Harbor could close before the safety file surfaced.
But why did the trust value reach 184 million if the company carried hidden liability?
And why did Julian risk his firm on a potentially defective product?
Maya’s investigator traced Cross Meridian’s lender.
The lender was not betting only on StepAssist.
The sale included ownership of Mercer Rehabilitation Network, seventeen clinics, patient-data licenses, and a federal reimbursement contract.
Even if StepAssist failed, the clinics and data remained valuable.
The acquisition agreement allowed the buyer to place defect liabilities into a separate entity with limited assets.
Patients would carry the risk.
The valuable network would survive elsewhere.
Project Harbor was not a rescue.
It was a way to extract clean assets before the safety truth became public.
Julian’s firm would earn a management fee large enough to repay its debt.
Madison would receive a trust distribution after the sale.
Evelyn would retain lifetime control of the family foundation.
I would lose the veto and become the public face of incapacity.
At midnight after the wedding, Madison planned to vote under temporary authority.
The chair was the incident meant to justify it.
The full plan came into focus only after investigators found a draft press release dated before the wedding.
CLAIRE MERCER STEPS AWAY FOLLOWING SERIOUS MEDICAL EPISODE.
It said Madison had “heroically protected family interests during her sister’s crisis.”
The release was written eleven days before I fell.
