Chapter 26 - LUKE BECOMES A FATHER

Luke and Sophie had a daughter when he was thirty.
Her name:
Clara Vance.
Madeline had been dead years.
The first time I held Clara, I thought about that old sentence.
He is not my grandson.
I looked at my son, now a father.
No one could define kinship for him from across a patio.
Luke created a trust for Clara.
Independent trustee.
Gradual education.
No Vance-company employment requirement.
No family-member capacity evaluator.
No hidden biological test clause.
If parentage were ever disputed, ordinary law applied.
Not grandmother preference.
Sophie reviewed every word.
Good.
At Clara’s fifth birthday, Luke made blackberry cobbler.
Of course.
He invited us.
No formal gala.
Backyard.
Paper plates.
Children.
Clara helped stir berries.
When Luke carried the dish outside, I felt the past rise.
He saw my face.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“Actually?”
“Yes.”
He handed Clara the first serving.
She tasted it.
Made a face.
“Too sour.”
Luke looked offended.
Sophie laughed.
I laughed harder.
No one kicked the plate.
No one demanded gratitude.
Clara asked for ice cream instead.
Allowed.
Food no longer carried family loyalty.
Later she spilled hibiscus punch.
Yes.
Sophie had made hibiscus punch without thinking about history.
The red liquid spread across the table.
My hand froze.
Luke noticed.
He picked up a towel.
“Mom, it’s juice.”
“I know.”
He wiped it.
That was all.
No residue.
No evidence bag.
May you like
No ambulance.
A spill.
