Chapter 21 - MADELINE COMES HOME

Madeline was released to supervised housing in her seventies after serving her custodial term and meeting release requirements.
No family residence.
No corporate office.
No trust authority.
Her income came from personal investments under professional management.
She requested contact with Brandon.
He agreed first.
Not Luke.
They met at a therapist’s office.
I did not attend.
Brandon came home quiet.
“How was it?”
“She looks old.”
“People age.”
“I know.”
“What did she say?”
“She apologized.”
“For what?”
“Specific things.”
Good.
“Did she blame your grandfather?”
“No.”
“Richard?”
“No.”
“Me?”
“No.”
Better.
“Do you want to see her again?”
“I don’t know.”
That was allowed.
He eventually met her quarterly.
Luke, now twelve, chose not to.
Madeline respected it.
At thirteen, he changed his mind.
Supervised meeting.
I attended only because Luke asked.
Madeline entered without gifts.
No pearls.
Plain blouse.
She sat across from him.
Luke asked first:
“Why did you kick the cobbler?”
Of all questions.
Madeline blinked.
“Because I was angry.”
“At me?”
“At what it represented.”
“What?”
“My father. The orchard. Things I had spent years trying to control.”
Luke frowned.
“So you kicked food.”
“Yes.”
“That was stupid.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you put medicine in my drink?”
Madeline did not say mistake.
“I wanted you to become sick enough that your mother would look irresponsible and the court would delay changes to your trust.”
Luke stared.
“That’s worse.”
“Yes.”
“Did you think I could die?”
“I told myself no.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Madeline looked at me.
I stayed silent.
Then:
“I knew there was risk.”
Luke nodded once.
He needed that sentence.
“Do you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
Madeline’s eyes filled.
“Because I believed protecting what I controlled was part of loving this family. It wasn’t.”
Luke leaned back.
“I don’t want you at my birthday.”
“I understand.”
No hug.
At the door, Luke stopped.
“Maybe another meeting.”
Madeline nodded.
Choice.
Not reconciliation under pressure.
That became their relationship for years.
Occasional.
May you like
Bounded.
Real.
