Chapter 5 - HEATHER’S FIRST LIE
Heather finally gave police a full interview with counsel.
She admitted placing the bracelet.
That surprised me.
Her explanation:
“I wanted to test whether Joanna would believe Louisa over evidence.”
Detective Ellis stared.
“What?”
“Louisa had been taking things.”
“Your video shows you planting the bracelet.”
“That one, yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Joanna refused to discipline her.”
“So you manufactured theft?”
“A controlled test.”
“To prove what?”
Heather’s lawyer intervened.
She continued anyway.
“That Joanna was irrationally protective.”
“Why did you search the child’s bags afterward?”
“I was looking for family property.”
“Adam’s key?”
“Yes.”
“What does it open?”
“I don’t know.”
“That is difficult to believe.”
“It belonged to Miller Ridge.”
“Then why was it in Adam’s childhood music box?”
“He kept family records.”
“Why not ask Joanna?”
“I did.”
No.
She had not.
“Why shave Louisa?”
Heather looked down.
“I lost my temper.”
“Why?”
“She lied.”
“About a key?”
“Yes.”
“Did Lydia know you planted the bracelet?”
“No.”
There.
If true, Lydia had been manipulated.
Still:
Lydia tied a barefoot child outside.
Her culpability did not disappear.
“Did Walter know?”
“No.”
“Did anyone?”
“No.”
Heather attempted to isolate herself.
Maybe truthful.
Then Detective Ellis asked:
“What did you mean on the recording when you said Joanna wouldn’t sign if she saw the original?”
Heather’s face changed.
Her attorney ended interview.
Good.
No forced confession.
Police sought broader financial records.
Different investigation.
The child-abuse case stayed focused.
Lydia gave another statement.
When told Heather admitted planting bracelet, she went silent for twenty seconds.
Then:
“She lied to me?”
Detective:
“Yes.”
“I tied my granddaughter outside because Heather lied?”
Detective:
“You tied your granddaughter outside because you chose to tie her outside. Heather’s lie is relevant, but it didn’t make the decision for you.”
Exactly.
Lydia cried.
Good.
Not absolution.
She admitted shaving? No, Heather shaved.
Lydia had brought the clippers from bathroom after Heather said:
“She needs a lesson she remembers.”
That made Lydia more involved than passive.
She handed the tool.
Heather shaved.
Then Lydia tied Louisa outside.
Walter claimed ignorance until he heard shouting.
House cameras partially corroborated:
He was in study.
Came out after Joanna arrived.
No evidence he helped shave or bind.
His later slap remained separate.
Prosecutors charged:
Heather — felony child abuse/endangerment, evidence fabrication relating to bracelet, coercion-related charges under applicable law.
Lydia — felony child endangerment/abuse and unlawful restraint.
Walter — assault against me and interference with my attempt to leave with child? Prosecutor reviewed. Eventually assault plus unlawful interference perhaps.
No kidnapping.
No attempted murder.
No wild overcharging.
My own charge stayed.
Family court prohibited all Miller contact.
Then Box 417 was opened.
Neutral bank officer.
Miller Fiduciary.
Naomi.
Court-appointed child representative.
No Lydia.
No Heather.
Inventory:
A sealed blue envelope.
Two bound ledgers.
Original trust correspondence.
A flash drive.
A small brass key.
Not Louisa’s key.
Another.
The blue envelope said:
FOR JOANNA MILLER — ONLY WITH INDEPENDENT COUNSEL.
My name.
I stopped breathing.
Naomi said:
“We wait for authorization.”
I wanted to tear it open.
Didn’t.
The box also contained a folder:
NORTHSTAR / ADAM BRANCH.
Not opened yet pending relevance.
Heather had claimed the box was empty.
It wasn’t.
Why had she lied?
That answer would come.
But the most personal item was a letter from Adam.
Sealed.
Not to Louisa.
Not to Miller Ridge.
To me.
