Chapter 25 - TESSA WITHOUT THE FAMILY OFFICE
Tessa left prison older and quieter.
She was permanently barred from fiduciary management and child-contact decisions involving Lily.
She lived in another state.
Worked for a small nonprofit event company in a nonfinancial role after disclosing her conviction.
Some employers refused her.
One accepted with restrictions.
Consequences continued.
She requested a meeting with me.
I declined twice.
Accepted once when Lily was thirty and had no objection.
Neutral restaurant.
Tessa looked at my hands.
“You still look like you want to hit me.”
“I don’t.”
“Good.”
Silence.
Then:
“I hated Elena.”
I knew.
“She made me feel unnecessary.”
“That was your problem.”
“Yes.”
“She saved the company.”
“I know.”
“She died.”
“I know.”
“And you used her daughter as a problem to solve.”
Tessa nodded.
“Yes.”
No explanation.
No tears until later.
She apologized for reaching toward Lily in the yard after the assault.
“I wanted to take her because I thought if I could calm her down before you understood, maybe the situation would shrink.”
“It didn’t.”
“No.”
I did not forgive her aloud.
I did not need to punish her with cruelty either.
When we left, she said:
“Tell Lily I’m sorry.”
“You have told her.”

“Right.”
She finally understood repetition did not create access.
