Chapter 18 - MY REPUTATION

People called me dangerous long before the party.

I had built Northline around precision and intimidation.

Not criminal intimidation.

Corporate.

Walk into a room quietly.

Know every exit.

Speak once.

Never repeat yourself.

Clients liked that.

Employees sometimes feared me.

After footage of me slapping Tessa leaked, the internet turned the image into mythology.

THE MAFIA DAD WHO DEFENDED HIS DAUGHTER.

I hated it.

Not the father part.

The celebration of violence.

Northline’s board asked whether the publicity hurt business.

“It might help,” one director admitted.

“That’s worse.”

We issued no heroic statement.

My guilty plea remained public.

I completed counseling.

Then I asked Northline’s human-resources director for a full review of my management style.

She looked terrified.

“That reaction is information,” I said.

The review found no violence.

No threats.

But employees described me as punitive when people brought bad news late.

Some delayed reporting because they feared my anger.

That sounded too much like my family.

Different scale.

Same danger.

I changed.

Incident reporting became protected.

Managers could challenge me in written risk reviews without retaliation.

I stopped treating fear as proof of authority.

Not perfectly.

Better.

Lily noticed too.

One morning she spilled orange juice on my laptop.

She froze.

Entire body.

I saw my family in that freeze.

“What?”

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

“Are you mad?”

“I’m annoyed at the juice.”

“Are you mad at me?”

“No.”

I closed the laptop.

“It might be dead.”

She whispered:

“Do I get punishment?”

“For an accident? No.”

She looked surprised.

I realized how much work remained.

Elena had once told me:

“You Calder men think control is the same thing as calm.”

She was right.

I had loved her.

Still missed her.

Still had to learn lessons she was no longer alive to repeat.

I began dating no one.

Not from loyalty theater.

I simply wasn’t ready.

When I eventually was, it would not be Lily’s job to approve my loneliness or repair it.
