Chapter 5 - ANNA’S UNFINISHED FILE

My wife Anna had been Little Pines’ compliance director.
She died from an aggressive cancer two years after leaving the company.
Her illness had nothing to do with the centers.
Her departure might have.
I opened the storage boxes I had avoided since her funeral.
Most contained photographs, tax files, and Lily’s baby clothes.
One box held a red notebook.
Anna had written dates, employee initials, and phrases without explanation:
Repeated wrist marks.
Incident descriptions changed after parent signatures.
Reset room listed as supply storage.
Tessa says insurance cannot survive another claim.
No names of children appeared.
No complete accusation.
Anna had been careful even inside a private notebook.
A sealed envelope contained a resignation letter she never sent.
She wrote that Little Pines management had pressured staff to classify certain injuries as playground accidents. She requested an independent audit.
The final page was missing.
I sent the documents to police and the licensing investigator.
Then I made a mistake.
I drove to the oldest Little Pines center.
The building was open. Parents were collecting children.
I asked the director where the “reset room” had been.
She went pale and called my father.
Within an hour, the family’s attorney accused me of entering company property to frighten staff.
I had not threatened anyone.
I had still warned them what investigators might seek.
My own lawyer, Cynthia Bell, was furious.
“You cannot investigate this yourself.”
“My daughter was hurt.”
“And your actions can help them argue that evidence changed because employees panicked after your visit.”
I apologized.
The damage remained.
That night the old center reported a plumbing emergency in the rear storage wing.
Workers removed soaked drywall and boxes before regulators arrived.
The reset room was empty.
Security footage from the hallway had been overwritten.
Then a former teacher named Maribel Santos contacted Cynthia.
“I worked there with Anna,” she said. “The room was never empty.”
Before she could explain, her line disconnected.
A photograph arrived from an unknown number.
It showed Maribel entering Cynthia’s office.
