Chapter 3 - THEY CAME BEFORE BREAKFAST

At seven the next morning, pounding shook my front door.

My mother stood outside with Tessa and my father.

Tessa wore dark glasses over the bruise forming across her cheek. My mother held a folder. My father carried no apology.

I kept the chain secured.

“You need to leave.”

“Please,” my mother said. “We need five minutes.”

“Lily is asleep.”

“That is exactly why we should settle this before she starts repeating things she misunderstood.”

Tessa removed her glasses.

“You assaulted me in front of thirty witnesses.”

“You admitted hurting my daughter.”

“I said it was a joke.”

My father stepped forward.

“Give me the drive.”

I said nothing.

His voice softened.

“It contains confidential business material. Noah took it from Tessa’s purse.”

“Why did he give it to Lily?”

“Because children take things.”

“Why was Lily hiding behind a toilet?”

No one answered.

My mother pushed the folder through the gap.

Inside was a prepared statement.

It described Lily’s injuries as the result of a children’s game involving ribbons and face paint. It described my slap as a misunderstanding. It required me to withdraw every complaint and return “all company property.”

In exchange, Tessa would not pursue charges.

“You wrote this before coming here,” I said.

“We were protecting everyone,” my mother replied.

“From what?”

Tessa’s smile disappeared.

“From your temper.”

Lily appeared in the hallway behind me.

She saw them and screamed.

I shut the door.

My father’s voice came through the wood.

“If this reaches the licensing board, hundreds of families could lose childcare.”

That was the first time anyone mentioned Little Pines Early Learning—the six childcare centers my family owned.

I had left the company three years earlier after my wife died. Tessa became chief operating officer. My father remained chairman. My mother oversaw family relations.

I looked down at the unsigned statement.

A line at the bottom identified the yellow-star flash drive as property of Little Pines Compliance.

Whatever Lily had witnessed at the party was connected to the business.

Then my phone rang.

Noah’s father—Tessa’s former husband—was calling.

“Tessa won’t let me speak to my son,” he said. “And Noah told me last night that Lily saw the quiet room.”
